Just seems like such a huge cultural departure. Like I can see it with small northeastern suburban schools, but no NFL players come out of there anyway.

Schools in the south, florida, texas tho?
states that LACK GRIT like Massachusetts or Delaware might ban football but I really can't see any serious footballing states banning it.

It's obviously not great for you, but the jury's out on whether heading the newer, lighter balls will give you CTE. There are calls for children to not start heading balls until later in life, which is probably sensible.

I can't imagine rugby is great for you either. I think Australian Rules football is probably not too bad, everyone should start playing that imo.

I doubt any safety equipment is going to help. Making helmets less protective to stop people leading with their heads would help a bit, but at the end of the day the sport involves a lot of collisions at speed and collisions are the problem.

yeah it's not the speed that gets you it's the stopping as my papa used to say

We know cigs kill and we still sell them. They'll find a way around this.

They'll outlaw FOOTBAW in the south just after the US gets universal health care and solves the problem of money in politics.

In related news, the NFL has great new helmets. Just terrific, the best!

It'll go the route of minor league hockey. Rules in that are so different than pros. At the pro level I could see the running back position changing forever, and a game that becomes more and more about air attack and speed. The battle in the trenches will change. Dline and LB will become a horrific position to play. But the game will go on.

I think we'll see every offensive record through the air blown away, and the RB records will never be broken again. Also think the 15 yard penalty may get a lot tougher, although not sure how. Maybe bumped to 20y, $, and on second one auto-suspension. Just guesses.

My kids are entering 6th and 8th grade, they go to a school that has a disturbingly high percentage of superjock dads, and I got an email from the meathead athletic director who was SHOOK because he doesn't think they're going to get enough kids signed up for football this year.

Over/under 4 years until they announce no more Ivy League football.

i'd be pretty surprised by that. football is pretty embedded into the culture (e.g. yale/harvard game)

They could play without pads rugby bro style. Would still fit that culture perfectly.

This is the first year in the last 4 or so that I'm not buying NFL Gamepass. Decided I can't financially support something that is so damaging to the mental health of the players. I'll still watch some games sometimes probably, but I'm not giving anyone any money for it.

Lol

Cancel the Superbowl not enough people watching

Seriously though, the outrage for this whole thing is winding down as most spectators realize it's on the NFL player to take their own risk for millions and fame. You guy's are just in the minority sympathetic/caring camp.

Good to see some players stepping away from the game in order to protect their health.

The military is already doing extensive work researching head injuries related to combat, mostly related to explosives/IEDs I think. I'd have to think that plenty of soldiers have already gotten CTE
