this is true. coaches always get killed here for running straight up the middle and settling for long field goals in these types of situations. the blame should be on Matt Ryan for taking a sack in a situation where you can never ever ever take a sack.

A 38-yard FG is not that long. You don't have to run straight up the middle - try a sweep or something.

Ryan could have taken 3 knees and that game is over. WOAT play calling

It was the Seattle OC who blinked in 2014. One of the best 2nd level moves in the NFL as they had assumed BB calling the expected timeout.

Belichick just won the Super Bowl. Does that mean he's not the WOAT coach?

lol its called context.

coaches get railed on for going conservative and running etc with 12mins left up 3 and other terrible spots not with 4mins left up 8.

not a single person with a brain would've said a peep had atl correctly ran the ball 3x then kicked a FG to go up 11.

Yeah they're also not mutually exclusive. Of course Ryan made a mistake there but he should've never been put in that spot. If you give it to a RB for a handoff when you could kneel out the clock for a win and he fumbles it's a mistake but he should never get put in that spot.

at the end of the day, no matter what the coaches called there, the pats' historically great playmaking defense would have come up with a game changing play

thats what they do

OK here's something weird that got picked up in the game thread but ought to be expanded on:

4-20-ATL 49
(:04) (Punt formation) PENALTY on ATL-5-M.Bosher, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at ATL 49 - No Play.
END QUARTER 3

The game clock started running after the delay penalty, ending the quarter - if this is a reffing **** up then so be it, but if not (and someone in thread indicates that it should run until 5 minutes left in the game), why the hell doesn't Quinn just call a bunch of delay of games, start rolling in fifth choice wideouts/special teams players to take snaps when officials start calling unsportsmanlike conduct and chucking people, then take a safety with 5 minutes to go you need 17 points in 5 minutes good luck?

two straight delay of game penalties is a 15 yard personal foul and the clock stops

I've mentioned this a thousand times. When there is an offensive penalty and the clock is running, the play clock resets, but the game clock keeps moving. However, the refs can decide to stop the clock at their discretion.

Such an odd rule. The clock should definitely stop on a delay of game. Chalk it up to another weird rule that makes no sense in Varianceball.

The defense should get to decide if the clock stops or not on a delay of game

From the NFL rules it says that within the last 5 minutes of the game the clock will stop on all penalties.

Bingo. Dan Quinn would rather lose than be perceived as a pussy, though.

I don't have an issue with them being aggressive. I have more of an issue with Matt Ryan taking 7 step drops out of a shotgun formation and taking sacks, instead of getting rid of the ball.

Some people would have trolled it, but Bryant/Dome/Distance all make it clearly the correct move.

The 3rd and 1 where Ryan fumbled is the worst call in the game.

giving the ball to devonta freeman who was averaging like 7 yards a carry seems like the right move

I agree with this. They were up 16 with 8 minutes left! Even if they get stuffed they will be punting with under 8 minutes. Also, gives evidence to momentum being a non-zero thing.
