The end of the Falcons game was absolutely shocking to me. I have no idea how Mike Smith thinks giving the Eagles at least one guaranteed shot to win the game (if not 2, as we saw) is a better, safer option than trying to gain a first down on the ground with Turner.

Originally I thought Smith just didn't realize there was too much clock left to v-formation it out...perhaps that actually was the case?

Why don't coaches realize they can squeeze a few extra seconds out of the victory formation?

Have Matt Ryan take the snap, cover it with both hands, and stand back there until a defender actually gets within a yard of him and THEN take a knee. You can kill an extra 3 seconds per play.

In all my years of watching football, Peyton Manning is the only QB I have ever seen actually do this to get a couple extra seconds killed when he needed it.

If Matt Ryan does this for 3 downs, he kills 9 of the 15 remaining seconds, and then they can intentional safety on 4th down to kill the rest.

It must run in the family. Down 13 with 7 minutes left to play, the Ravens had it 4th and goal at 12. Rather than going for it to score a TD and cut the lead to 6, they kicked a FG.

Plus I mean how much equity are you giving up there by punting with 15 seconds left? Maybe 1%? Taking the penalty on the kickoff and doing some form of onside kick would have been pretty sweet, would love to see the math on that.

the players are even stupider than the coaches, occasionally a smart qb will do it (manning, rivers, brady) but their qb is donovan mcnabb, who 10 years into his career was unaware that ties exist in the nfl

Andy Reid calling a timeout before 4th down was really stupid. If he didn't call a timeout they could have had the ball back with a minute or so left at around midfield.

As Brian Burke pointed out the big Harbaugh fail was kicking a 55 yard FG on 4th and 1. Taking the points isn't that bad a decision and would probably be +EV if they did something on the kickoff besides getting an auto touchback.
