I knew someone was going to post about that in this thread. Tomlin's decision to go for it there was a good one and I still think that.

pudge - I was only half-watching but I think you have to give DAL credit for a great defensive stand there....and perhaps outsmarting PIT with their advance scouting or something and coming up with a good guess at what play was likely to be called there and having their own play designed to destroy it.

Am I missing something? This seems like a bad time to try a fake...

Tomlin's decision is fine. But if you are going to go for it on 4th, run on 3rd down too please.

Going for it was fine, the play call was meh. I forgot where the ball was placed exactly, but I don't see why a sneak would be bad there. Whatever, the steelers looked like they had no chance at sustaining long drives during the game, so go for it there and hope the defense can set the offense up for a late FG. imo.

Every fake field goal is a risky play, but there is no chance whatsoever that anyone even remembers that play, much less posts about it in this thread, if the kicker runs for a 6 yard gain and gets tackled.

IOW, what makes that play notably stupid was the turnover for a touchdown.

This is exactly the opposite mindset of what this thread was started for, which is IMO times where jobEV and winEV diverge.

Yeah, the play call was a little brutal, but I somewhat overlook it because Tomlin is so ****ing badass.

Didnt you say it was a 3-3 tie? Isnt 3 points like increasingly = 7 points in that spot? Plus the gigantic number of times when you miraculously convert the fake and STILL dont get the TD? I tend to think fake FGs are like almost always a bad decision, with only possible exceptions being very short FG and very long ones, but on the long ones anyhow they always expect the fake.

I agree with this. From the spot I don't think a sneak was good since it was close to a full yard.

After second down I told my dad that the should run up the middle twice. I was quite happy they went for it.

Also the outcome shows a big reason why going for it was so good there - they didn't get it but the field position put them in a great position. Obviously the return was a huge part of that but the most likely outcome given the way the game went was Dallas going three and out or maybe getting a first down and Pittsburgh starting inside the 50.

I assume he's tacking on the extra 7 yards because that's how far back Janikowski was where the botched pitch went down.

It was the second quarter. Fake field goals do seem to fail an awful lot, but it's possible Oakland saw something in the coverage that made it more likely. It wasn't obviously stupid. It turned out really badly.

opinions on atlanta punting on 4th&5 with about 3:00 left on their own 30 down four when they'd not stopped new orleans all half?

Zorn not going for it on 4th and 2 at the 50 with ~1:00 left in the first half and no TOs

I might as well get something in this thread too.

Zorn wasting a challenge when the ravens gained an extra few yards after recovering their own fumble. It was their last challenge midway through the 4th. He should have realized there was no fumble, so it looked like he wanted a few yards.

He's very, very lucky that didn't come back to burn him in a key spot later.

being up by 6 is an advantage the .03% of the time that they miss the xp.

I came into post about that decision in the Jacksonville decision.

Also Jeff Fisher going for it on 4th and 3 at the 30 in a dome down 1 with one of the best kickers in the NFL.

Actually Houston is open-air for this season, Hurricane Ike damaged the retractable roof, but it shouldn't have mattered, the turf looked fine. That was the dumbest call I think I've ever seen Jeff Fisher make. It's mind-boggling that anyone would put a game into the hands of a journeyman quarterback on 4th down instead of letting one of the best kickers in the NFL do what you pay him to do.

Yea he threw 45% on the day. The funniest part was it wasn't even a short pass to a slot WR or something, it was a 15 yard fade looking to hit a receiver in stride for the endzone, which would've been terrible clock management even if it did succeed.
