Welcome to lovely Quebec City!

Your venue is historic (by which I mean old) Le Colisée
spoiler: there will be Nordiques sweaters

Your hosts, the Quebec Remparts!

W Adam Erne (Lightning, 2nd)
W Anthony Duclair (Coyotes, 3rd)
G Zach Fucale (Canadiens, 2nd)
W Dmytro Timashov (2015 eligible)
W Vladimir Tkachev (2015 eligible)
D Ryan Graves (Rangers, 4th)
C Marco Roy (Oilers, 2nd)

Erne is their main man, scoring at a goal per game rate in the playoffs, looks like Timashov might be a usual riding partner up front. Otherwise there's Duclair, who apparently has been something of an enigma in the Q. Loads of speed talent for him, but the production just isn't quite there. If Tkachev sounds familiar, it's probably from when the Oilers tried to sign him illegally last fall. And I guess Fucale is a factor for them in net, he'll have to come up big if the hosts are gonna take this down.

The other Q representative, the Rimouski Oceanic!

W Christopher Clapperton (Panthers, 5th)
D Jan Kostalek (Jets, 4th)
C Frederik Gauthier (Maple Leafs, 1st)
D Samuel Morin (Flyers, 1st)
G Philippe Desrosiers (Stars, 2nd)

Weird team that I think is led by some overage players, which isn't totally unusual. Gauthier is a big plug center, Morin is a big defensive D, and it seems like Desrosiers might have lost his starting job to the backup. These guys seem kind of boring, and no key draft eligible kids to look out for? Apparently these guys are the best the Q has to offer though, ugh. But hey, maybe Crosby will show up at some point to cheer on his old team!

The OHL champion Oshawa Generals!

W Michael Dal Colle (Islanders, 1st)
C Cole Cassels (Canucks, 3rd)
W Tobias Lindberg (Senators, 4th)
W Michael McCarron (Canadiens, 1st)
W Hunter Smith (Flames, 2nd)
W Matt Mistele (Kings, 6th)
D Mitchell Vande Sompel (2015 eligible)
D Stephen Desrocher (2015 eligible)

Also known as "the jerks who ruined everything" by taking just 5 games to eliminate Connor McDavid & friends in the OHL final. Some nice talent here with super sniper Dal Colle, power forward McCarron, and improved 2-way center Cassels. Loaded with wingers apparently, and a couple draft eligible D to watch out for. Should be a pretty strong team having won Ontario, but maybe a little worried that they dropped games to every playoff opponent they faced.

And the WHL champion Kelowna Rockets!

C Leon Draisaitl (Oilers, 1st)
W Nick Merkley (2015 eligible)
C Rourke Chartier (Sharks, 5th)
D Madison Bowey (Capitals, 2nd)
D Josh Morrissey (Jets, 1st)
W Justin Kirkland (Predators, 3rd)
C Dillon Dube (2016 eligible)

Had a strong team this season, then loaded up by trading for the best guys on the market in big 2-way center Draisaitl and strong all-around D Morrissey. Chartier is their big goal threat, Bowey is as solid a D as there is, and they're also getting contributions from some youngsters in Merkley & Dube. Had the furthest to travel, but are they the favourite in this thing? Maybe.
Fun Fact: D-Man Factory!

Round Robin

May 22 Kelowna Rockets – Quebec Remparts
May 23 Rimouski Océanic – Oshawa Generals
May 24 Quebec Remparts – Oshawa Generals
May 25 Rimouski Océanic – Kelowna Rockets
May 26 Oshawa Generals – Kelowna Rockets
May 27 Quebec Remparts – Rimouski Océanic

Playoff Round

Tiebreaker (if nec.) May 28
Semi-Final May 29 Third Place – Second Place
Final May 31 Semi-Final Winner – First Place

Kelowna are probably too good; feel like the Q teams will be their main threats.

tournament starts tomorrow with the hosts Quebec taking on WHL champs Kelowna

anyway, here's an article on the top draft eligible players to watch out for:

Quote:
The top-ranked forward is Kelowna right wing Nicholas Merkley (5-foot-10, 191 pounds), No. 23 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of the top draft-eligible North American skaters. Merkley had 20 goals and 90 points in 72 regular-season games for the Rockets, and five goals and 27 points in 19 WHL playoff games.

"He's a highly competitive player with excellent skill and offensive hockey sense," NHL Director of Central Scouting Dan Marr said. "He's more of a playmaker than a goal scorer, but he has the ability to score big goals at the right time."

Oshawa defenseman Mitchell Vande Sompel (5-10, 182), No. 34 on Central Scouting's final ranking, had 12 goals and 63 points in 58 regular-season games, and three goals and 12 points in 16 playoff games.

"His improvement has been gradual but I think he's always been a very good player," Oshawa coach D.J. Smith said. "He was a first-round pick in our league, was highly regarded. Some even thought he would have went higher in the OHL draft as a forward."

Oshawa selected Vande Compel with the 14th pick of the 2013 OHL draft.

"He makes great offensive plays, is good on the power play and is a great skater and puck mover," Smith said. "He has a great compete level and by no stretch has Mitch come out of nowhere. He's been a very good player all the way up through his young career."

^ not the most exciting group ever, but obviously that's all Oshawa's fault

article also has a nice tournament overview, good read

interesting that all 4 of these teams have shipped the Mem Cup previously
Oshawa leads the way with 4 of them

Top 2015 draft-eligible prospects (CSS final ranking): Goaltender Callum Booth (No. 2); forwards Vladimir Tkachev (No. 159), Dmytro Timashov (No. 92).
VS

The WHL champion Kelowna Rockets!

NHL prospects: Defensemen Joshua Morrissey (Winnipeg Jets, 2013, No. 13), Madison Bowey (Washington Capitals, 2013, No. 53), Mitchell Wheaton (Detroit Red Wings, 2013, No. 139); forwards Justin Kirkland (Nashville Predators, 2014, No. 62), Leon Draisaitl (Edmonton Oilers, 2014, No. 3), Rourke Chartier (San Jose Sharks, 2014, No. 149), Tyrell Goulbourne (Philadelphia Flyers, 2013, No. 72)

Top 2015 draft-eligible prospects (CSS final ranking): Defensemen Devante Stephens (No. 116), Joe Gatenby (No. 174); forward Nicholas Merkley (No. 23)

funny that Quebec and Rimouski wasted so much energy along the way. the old thing where the host made it to the league final, so both teams already clinched and were playing for pride. well these teams really went for it, 7-game series with OT in G5 & G6, and 2OT for G7 in Rimouski on Monday. Kelowna & Oshawa probably ended up better rested, lol.

fun start

nice rip by Brouillard there

not terribly worried for Kelowna yet though, they've had some chances they could have scored from

- Erne hurt?

well he left and i didn't see him return, pretty bad news considering he led Quebec with 41 goals, and scored 21 more in the playoffs

- both goalies pretty great in the 1st, Fucale in particular was lights out
- Duclair had a good period as well, should have scored on that one chance he had, could have easily had 2-3 really
- Dube looking really good in this for a 16yo player, very noticeable, could have had a goal or two himself if not for Fucale

Bowey has not had a great game, Draisaitl either
Chartier supposedly playing hurt and looks it

and it's funny how little finish Duclair has
so many great chances (including like 3 breakaways), and his goal is in off his foot

wonder if one of their most famous alumnus will make an appearance?
