Champ Bailey's 2006 season vs. Revis' 2009 season

Who had the better season?

2006 Champ Bailey:

Thrown at 35 times, allowed 4 receptions (almost 10% completion rate), defended 21 of those passes, tied for league lead with 10 INTS.

Also had 98 tackles (84 solo) for 3rd best on the team, trailing LB's Al Wilson (113) and Ian Gold (101).

Six of Champ's 10 INTS came inside the Broncos' 4-yard line, and 3 were inside the end zone.

If he would have had 1 more fumble recovery, he would have led the league in takeaways.

I don't know who Champ lined up against every game in 2006 as I can't find that info. I also don't know if he was always against the #1 (as Revis was/is) or if he only played one side of the field.

2009 Revis, or as Rex Ryan says: "the greatest season ever by a corner" and "meant more to our defense than Ed Reed or Ray Lewis ever did":

Wk 1 vs. Andre Johnson: 2 catches for 24 yds
Wk 2 vs. Moss: 3 catches for 21 yds
Wk 3 vs. Justin Gage: 3 catches for 28 yds
Wk 4 vs. Colston: ZERO RECEPTIONS
Wk 5 vs. Ted Ginn: 2 catches for 57 yds and 1 TD
Wk 6 vs. TO: 1 catch for 11 yds
Wk 7 vs. Louis Murphy: 1 catch for 6 yds
Wk 8 vs. Ted Ginn: ZERO RECEPTIONS
Wk 10 vs. Mike Sims-Walker: ZERO RECEPTIONS
Wk 11 vs. Randy Moss: 4 catches for 29 yds and 1 TD
Wk 12 vs. Steve Smith: 1 catch for 5 yds
Wk 13 vs. TO: 3 catches for 31 yds
Wk 15 vs. Roddy White: 3 catches for 27 yds
Wk 16 vs. Reggie Wayne: ZERO RECEPTIONS
Wk 17 vs. Ocho Cinco: ZERO RECEPTIONS

Thrown at 108 times, 6 INTS, 121 INT return yds, 1 INT returned for TD, 31 passes defensed,

60 total tackles (47 solo), 5th most on the team

I'm a Jets fan, and I'd say Bailey's was better. Absolutely insane dominance at the position that year.

wow, this isn't close at all, Bailey allowed 4 receptions all year? are you serious?

Re: champ bailey's 2006 season vs. revis' 2009 season

don't want to hate on revis at all, but thrown at 35 times says so much. i told everyone who would listen that bailey was the best player in the league for 3 years. a couple people took my point, but didn't really believe. which is fine, not like it's an exact science. but bailey was great blitzing, great in run support, great tackler in space while in zone, and obv great out on bailey island. great at everything. the way he did it with his hips turned in and running sideways most the time was just sick to watch. totally nonstandard technique, but never got his hips flipped. what a player.

Re: champ bailey's 2006 season vs. revis' 2009 season

That stat about 35 thrown at, 4 receptions has to be total BS. Just look at it the same way Revis is being considered - what were the stats of the #1 WR of the opposing team the day they played?

Here's the stats for my judgment of who the #1 WR was on the other team, and their performance (Moss was technically #2 in stats behind Ronald Curry in Oakland, but I have to think of him as #1). It is definitely notable that no #1 WR scored a TD in a game vs Denver that year.

Week 1 at St. Louis Rams Torry Holt 7-80
Week 2 Kansas City Chiefs Eddie Kennison 2-39
Week 3 at New England Patriots Reche Caldwell 3-46
Week 4 Baltimore Ravens Mark Clayton 5-27
Week 5 Oakland Raiders Randy Moss 5-86
Week 6 at Cleveland Browns Braylon Edwards 2-6
Week 7 Indianapolis Colts Marvin Harrison 5-38
Week 8 at Pittsburgh Steelers Hines Ward 7-127
Week 9 at Oakland Raiders Randy Moss 1-8
Week 10 San Diego Chargers Eric Parker 4-42
Week 11 at Kansas City Chiefs Eddie Kennison 1-16
Week 12 Seattle Seahawks Darrell Jackson 6-91
Week 13 at San Diego Chargers Eric Parker 1-34
Week 14 at Arizona Cardinals Anquan Boldin 5-60
Week 15 Cincinnati Bengals Chad OchoCinco 3-32
Week 16 San Francisco 49ers Arnaz Battle 4-56

Total opponents: 61 catches for 788 yards and no TD. However, it's worth noting that he only played 4 games vs 1000yd WRs while Revis played vs 7.

Re: champ bailey's 2006 season vs. revis' 2009 season

DVOA for JEts vs #1 WRs last year was -39.6 and 7.2 Attempts PG (APG) and 29.4 Yards Per Game (YPG). Against #2s it was -20.4 and 6.3 APG and 44.4 YPG. I think Jets lined Revis up with #1s almost exclusively but I could be wrong.

DVOA for Broncos vs #1 WRs in 2006 was -17, 60 YPG and 7.6 APG. #2 it is -15.2, 7.8 APG and 58.1 YPG.

My guess is if Champ's stats are correct he just guarded a side while Revis moved around with the #1s. Denver's overall D was nowhere near as good as the Jets as well so they obviously avoided Champ while the Jets forced it to Revis's way by doubling the #2 a lot of the time and leaving Revis with 1 on 1 with the opposing teams best receiver.

I always thought that 35 attempts/4 catches one was a bit inflated. What's the source?

Bailey's was better, but not by that much. His thrown at #s are deceiving.

reggie wayne played 1 half? ted ginn didn't start the second game, and i don't think he played all that much. So your zero receptions is kind of misleading. also, i am sure it looks good to put TO down there, but lets be honest, he had no qb to get him the ball.

Pretty hard to catch passes from the bench imo (iirc he was benched for that game as a WR but had a sick game as a return man)

Champ Bailey, because he is actually willing to tackle, among other reasons.

Not going to argue for Revis over Champ, but this is a dumb comment. Revis is a good tackler for a CB
