Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

yeah idk, thought i heard something where they could both go there as a package deal, but it's probably BS

i mean i don't even think they could afford both, unless someone takes Martin from them. and i don't think anyone wants to be doing that.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

i think martin would definitely move. don't know why people are so down on him, i know he had a rough season but he is a really underrated defender.

i think they could definitely both end up there, the money's there for it. it would really hamstring the penguins' depth.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

both there with or without Martin?

and how would it hamstring their depth:

Center - Sid, Geno, Sutter, whoever
Wing - Neal, Parise, Kunitz, Kennedy, Cooke, Dupuis, whoever
D - Letang, Suter, Orpik, Engelland, Lovejoy, prospects/whoever (assuming Martin is moved)
Goal - Fleury, Vokoun

that's a pretty damn solid team, depending on what money is left over for filler.

D maybe a little weak unless some of those prospects are ready to make the jump, or unless they can sign some guys. or you if you like Niskanen, or think Strait is any good (no clue).

Doesnt Pitt still have to clear tons of cap space to pull that off?

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

There is no way they can pull that off with all the contracts expiring at the end of next year.

Maybe they can get one of Suter/Parise

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

i think they could def sign both if they can move Martin.

and what contracts expiring? the only major one is Sid, and he already makes $8.7m. rumour is he wants a small bump to $9m or something. if getting Parise costs them Kennedy, or Cooke, or whoever then so be it. that's fairly easily replaceable.

They only have 5 forwards signed for 2013-2014

Even if most of those are small its going to add up quick...

Despres and Bortuzzo are looked at as D prospects who could step in next year.

I mean, that's a great team, but it is really, really top heavy. Estimate $14.5M for Parise/Suter combined, then you've got Malkin and Crosby needing raises to $10M, Letang should get $8M - it's $42M for 5 players in a year or two. Pittsburgh doesn't really have a forward prospect besides Eric Tangradi, so that's a lot of mixing and matching in their future.

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $59,320,227; BONUSES: $130,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $10,979,773

Assuming DKing (rfa) gets 1M
Some question about how Gagne holds up. If Penner want to sign for cheap, he could take that spot.

Re: NHL Offseason 2012 Thread

pretty sick situation to be in, bringing back the cup winning roster minus 1 player, and still having 10mill in cap space
