Perhaps he's not as grooved as has been claimed, he didn't do much in the the warmup game against a poor Kent side who have been propping up Div 2 of the county championship all season until yesterday's win against fellow strugglers Leicestershire
No Johnson is a 1st change bowler. Always has been.

We miss Harris a lot, Eng batsman are not being forced to play shots anywhere near enough atm.

Meh we aren't talking about English batsmen with the greatest temperament to resist.

Pretty even first hour

I do like that Clarke has already given all of his bowlers a go in the first hour though, that's the sort of thing I couldn't see Cook doing

Loose shot second ball after drinks. Rookie mistake, not something you expect of the captain on the big stage.

And that is why Starc is potentially unplayable in Eng imo

Well this isn't good. Missed 2nd wicket, but just saw Bell, how the hell does he not review that?

Well, hawkeye finally shown for Bell and turns out it was just clipping leg, but that's the sort of decision you really should review imo

Checking in at half time!

Honestly, I thought it might be even worse than that for England.

Bollocks.

1 down - "No big deal. Let's dig in for now and look to pick up run rate later"

2 down - "Not great but if we can get to lunch it is no disaster"

3 down - "**** **** **** **** ****"

Time to look for small mercies. Root, our best batsman, is still there and he's used to playing with the lower order... and he just hit a beautiful drive!

Seriously though, the optimum time to lose hope is when Root gets out. That's obvious.

I'll be staying hopeful even still but it'll be the irrational homer type of hope at that point.

This Hazlewood kid looks legit by the way. Ought to be ahead of Johnson in the pecking order on this evidence although first time I have seen him bowl so lolsamplesize.

guys, it's hardly time to hit the panic button, we're 90 minutes into a 25 day contest

Obviously.

Let me clarify that panicky feelings and references to loss of hope are in relation to this innings and not the contest as a whole.

It's hardly hysterical to think we're not looking good if by lunch time on the first day we have lost our best 2 batsmen (esp. when one bats at no. 5).

Rooty going all New Zealandy, thats the way bro, Gazza loosened up a bit towards the end there too

Cmon England, all hope is not lost (prob will be gone by the time I wake up)

Good nite

And don't forget we've still got Jimmy up our sleeve, ready to block out for the draw again

Pretty poor last couple of overs before lunch from Johnson tbh, just might have given England a bit of a lift

Usual pessimistic message I see before you got to bed Probably won't be the last either...

Starc is unbelievable to keep getting swing at around the 20 over mark is impressive.

Root looking good as usual, but Ballance is looking a bit shaky against Johnson here, his technique is fundamentally flawed imo. He was starting to get like this through the Windies and NZ series and if he continues it through the early part of this series then there's got to be a decent chance he doesn't see the end of it.

Not particularly remarkable, when you've got a proper ball to use. The Duke does that because it has a seam, unlike those mickey mouse balls by Kookaburra that you insist on using
