Scholes is a great pick.
I'm a bit confused here, is it peak over one season as a goal scorer over a career of goals? Does constantly doing it count?

Undrafted and Shearer are joint top scorers in a single season for 42 games (34 goals). Shearer, Undrafted and undrafted got 31 goals in a single season for 38 games.

Taking assists and general play rather than pure goal scoring Undrafted would be the first pick then?

Undrafted banged 30 goals in a season too, is he classed as better than UndRafted, Undrafted, undrafted, Undrafted etc etc due to that higher peak due to goals?

Any team built around scholes got a great chance.

Not trolling, United is a system club whose system left town. All players under Fergie must be massively downgraded as a result.

I think Keane is a decent pick but not sure everyone will agree.

lol kingweed just dropping half a dozen undrafteds

cmon man

the OP is as clear as can be about what counts, it's obviously not just peak over one season, but the general rule of thumb is players>careers

shearer just about in my top 5, he was miles over replacement in the 90s. giggs probably wouldn't make my top 10

considered scholes #1 overall but figured i'd have an easier time botching together a midfield with later picks than making do with a much later striker

keane also in my mind as well, maybe slightly early for bergkamp but not going to hate the pick, huge fanboy

only one other player that i considered at #1 left on the board. will be interesting to see where he goes, would have snapped him over giggs

edit - and there he goes

Donk's first pick

I didn't think this player would fall to me, because he was the greatest player in the world in his time in the Premier League. Had he stayed, he would be the ldo #1 ainec. I think his Premier League peak is comparable to anyone drafted so far.

Spoiler:

Cristiano Ronaldo

This guy has become one of the two greatest players of his generation at Real Madrid, but he was an absolute beast in his last 3 seasons for Manchester United. Winning a Ballon D'or and a Golden Boot.

He had the trickery and the pace to beat players and leave them trailing in his wake, combined with clinical finishing, a fierce shot and was amazing in the air having one of the best headers in the game. He also had those free kicks that defied logic on how they found the net time and time again.

Team:

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Re Peak vs Career

I assume peak is considered the level of play they displayed over the best years of their time in the PL. So players who suffered horrible injuries and then faded away are judged on their pre-injury peak and players who had one outstanding season in the middle of an otherwise good but not great career are considered just to have been running hot for a bit.

Of course; a good summation.

Cant hate the Ronaldo pick much, but he only played 6 seasons, 3 of which he was nowhere near the superstar he is now

Its still fine obviously given his last few seasons

The best United player I have ever seen whose contribution to the success United have had over the past 20 years is immeasurable and whose ageing/retirement has left a hole in United's CM that's still seen today.

The most underrated player in the history of the league amongst casual fans because he wasn't a media whore/badge kisser along with not being a typical "English CM". Many fans questioned what would happen to United's MF when Keane left but rather than falling apart the team went onto an even higher level of success winning 5 titles and making 3 European Cup finals in the 8 seasons since his departure with Scholes at the heart of a huge amount of it.

Despite having more Premier League winners medals than Viera/Gerrard/Lampard combined if there was one player who could sum up what's wrong with the footballing values in England it would be Scholes, the most technically gifted player of his generation being played on the left wing to accommodate for a Gerrard/Lampard CM pairing, but then again this is a league where Scott Parker wins POTY.

Honours:

11 Premier League winners medals
2 Champions Leagues
3 FA Cups
Close to a dozen other trophies that people don't really care about.

Scorer of some all time great goals:

And a few greatly important ones:

Scholes technical ability and style of play seemed to be more appreciated by his counterparts across the water:

Quote:
‘In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything.

‘He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.’ Xavi
Quote:
"My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. Scholes is undoubtedly the greatest midfielder of his generation." Zidane
Quote:
“The only great English midfielder in my career was Paul Scholes. He has elegance in him. Others were pretenders.” Pirlo

Quote:
However, perhaps the greatest compliment paid to Scholes came just before and after his final minutes as a professional player. In the aftermath of United’s Champions League final hammering at the hands of Barcelona, Scholes could be seen strutting off the Wembley pitch wearing the shirt of Barca midfielder Andres Iniesta, having been pursued by the Spaniard straight after the final whistle to swap jerseys. What Scholes did not realise at the time was that Iniesta only got to make the request after drawing straws with four of his team-mates – Lionel Messi, Xavi, Pedro and Sergio Busquets.

That’s right. In the countdown to the biggest club football match on the planet, the best player on the planet (Messi, of course) was locked in a battle with four of his team-mates for the right to ask Scholes for his jersey at the end of the game. This on the back of Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola stating instantly, when asked, that Scholes would be the Man United player he would most like to have in his team.

But of those three seasons he was top 3-5 player in the world which really just crushes the competition imo. Was hoping the 3/6 season logic would slip all the way to my pick

Think Ronaldo went about where he should tbh. Obviously if he'd stayed would have been 1 without it being close. 3 seasons where he was playing close to his current level, but even out of those, 2 were merely good seasons (17/34, 18/33) but that one in between 31/34 you could make the argument that that is one of the greatest PL seasons of all time.

I think if he doesn't have that 31/34 season and just has another 17/34 he's probably not a top 10 pick.

(I know there's more to Ronaldo's game than goals, particularly at United but that's what he's known for now)
