Didn't he kill the guy he was convicted of murdering bc he knew too much about him murdering the guys he just got acquitted for? I doubt he is dumb enough to think he'd be released after being acquitted. But he may be dumb enough to think that he murdered the first guy for nothing and if he hadn't murdered him he'd be a free man now.

Of course, if he hadn't murdered him he would have been convicted in this case (but he probably wasn't that logical).
