I think my favorite part of the smaller ball is that it's a super weird small ball too. It's the same size as the women's ball but the same weight as a men's ball. Why are they using a ball that I can't buy at Walmart?

3pt shooting would be interesting. I wonder if China would sweep the medals b/c they'd have people practicing 3s for 16 hours a day, or if Steph would be too good.

If 3 point shooting was an olympic event, I suspect there's a bunch of guys that are 5'8" and otherwise not very gifted athletically who can shoot unguarded shots just as well or better than anybody in the NBA.

Just like how the best free throw shooter in the world is just some old guy who shoots granny style and hits like 99.99%

I wouldn't be surprised if Steph Curry isn't in the top 50 shooters in the world, if we are refering to defenseless basketball. He's just the best shooter in the context of actual game play.

Exactly. Steph Curry wouldn't stand a chance against guys who are just specialist shooters and not actually basketball players.

I wonder if that's still true at 30 feet. I'd bet Curry is still best in planet at 30 foot defenseless shooting.

Agree with Carnivore and (I think) Dudd here, unguarded 3pt shooting as an event would be awful and filled with weirdos who just shoot. Curry being GOAT shooter in the context of NBA games is so much more impressive and interesting than whoever jacks up shots like pop-a-shot Stans. Curry very unlikely to be top on the planet at 30 foot defenseless shooting.

It would be similar to long-drive competitions - top PGA guys are no where close to winning those. Specialists are always going to dominate over guys that focus on broader set of skills.

I'm a fan. Wonder if someone's going to complain about a foul call and take their ball and go home.

An Olympic dunk contest would be amazing, as long as the US could send like 10 participants. The best dunkers in the world are non-NBA specialists as well.

The dumb thing about the small ball is that this game is no longer good basketball practice. The whole point of playing 3 on 3 is to practice your basketball skills. Playing with a different ball means this sport now messes with your actual basketball game. And playing actual basketball messes with your game in this sport.

Aren't 3 on 3 tournaments typically played with regulation (outdoor adapted) basketballs?

The NBA should actually invite these guys to the dunk contest. It would be far more entertaining, would give some new guys 15 minutes of fame, etc.

The dunk contest as is has gotten stale. Players can't risk injury, and really shouldn't waste their time or energy practising this stuff when they could be practising useful skills.

The 3 point contest would also be great if it featured a mix of NBA players and other invites who have won regional 3 point contests.

I mean if you really want to have a basketball contest that basically excludes NBA players, why not just have a "must be under 6 feet tall" rule?

I'd actually love to see what a basketball game featuring all the best qualified players would look like.

Video #79 there is a real pet peeve of mine. You can't call a dunk a "free throw line dunk" if you take off from way inside the free throw line. That dunks label is ridiculous. You need to at least have the back of your foot touching the line to call it a free throw line dunk, not be taking off 2 feet inside and then just generously calling it a free throw line dunk.

It would be a really interesting game though. It's not like 5'11" inch guys would be playing center and 5'3" guys would be playing point guard. You'd pretty much have 85-90% of players being pretty much the same height, with a handful of ultra skilled guys that make it despite being legit short guys, and every player would be exceptionally skilled with the ball. Standard basketball positioning ideas would go completely out of the window.

Can players play in both the full basketball AND the 3x3 versions at the same Olympics?

I don't think the olympics has ever had rules banning participants from participating in similar sports. If so Michael Phelps would have like 5 medals instead of a bazillion.

I envisioned the 3pt contest that you had to play for a team that qualified. Gymnastics has a rule that you can't do the all around or apparatus competitions unless you're in the team event.

They have to do something like make the ball smaller. Otherwise any random park in NYC could field a team that would beat everyone else in the world.

Proper 3-3 rules is make it take it, no blood no foul, all made shots count 1. I imagine youngsters now play some bastardized version that favors shooting long and skill.
