Some others:

Coutinho was a late removal from the list and if he gets decent playing time under Leonardo he should be back in.

Canales hopefully will get loaned out soon or who knows when he'll play.

Breno I will get to see a lot for Bayern so he is definitely a strong candidate.

Shaktar Donetsk players I did desperately want to include but overall lacked solid impressions. Douglas Costa is pretty highly rated though.

Weiss from Rangers should probably be on the list?

Who is regarded as the best player in Scotland currently anyway (other than Paddy Mccourt, Marty ) ??

Is Moussa Sissoko still under 21? He seems to have been highly rated forever Have no idea if he is still doing great though or have stalled somewhat.

Rodwell has sick potential but still haven't established himself. Should soon though.

Munoz, Dejan Lovren and Sakho, young defenders with good cases already. Especially the last two.

José Rondón who is a very exciting attacking player and a late removal.

Badstuber? Mistakes still too fresh in mind but yeah should probably be included. Very good for his age and versatile.

Gonalons should be a very solid player very soon.

Stefan Reinartz (born January 1st!) if he can still hold back the likes of Rolfes and Ballack on the Leverkusen midfield will definitiely be on the list. Also like Moritz from Schalke if he can establish himself in their lineup.

Ramsey again when he hopefully makes a good recovery.

I think that's the main ones. Then there are undoubtedly sick talents from teams like Chelsea and Barcelona who have world class obstacles to overcome to get playing time.

He is, and I just downloaded some Toulouse matches the other day to take a closer look at him. Only watched one so far but the physical tools, both pace and strength, are definitely there and while Toulouse were poor on the whole and didn't have much possession there did seem to be some flashes of good movement and passing there. Versatility as well being able to play anywhere in midfield (he was playing quite an advanced role in the match I watched). One to watch for sure and I might update my thoughts once I watch him some more.

Also downloaded some PSG matches to watch Sakho and he impressed me already with his physical ability, strong heading and tackling. There were some errors of judgment and mistakes still but again it's only two matches so I don't want to extrapolate too much based on those. Though whether that is enough to get on the list yet I don't know. For example you have Hummels at 244 and I think he has been very good for Dortmund this season so Sakho probably wouldn't be ahead of him, I wouldn't think. Maybe in the 250-300 range.

Also have a few Rennes matches to watch M'Vila who did make the list.

Why were goalkeepers not included in this? How many goalkeepers do you guys think should be in the top 100 players in the world?

Are defenders really not that valuable? There are so few on these lists, and in general are the more forward thinking ones such as Alves and Maicon.

From the OP:

Quote:
I have to say that especially trying to compare goalkeepers to the others was troublesome and I wonder if it's not really pointless. But I have included some and left out a lot. (UPDATE: Since writing this elsewhere I have decided to REMOVE GOALKEEPERS ENTIRELY. Feel free to make a best goalkeeper list. I might make one too!

There are also not that many defenders!
Especially central defenders who for their team compared to the other "outfield" positions generally have more limited roles. A job to defend so to speak.

Now it's been somewhat fashionable to criticize football player awarding almost always benefiting the attacking players, and I used to do it too, after all defending arguably is just as important as attacking, the thing is though that this is something very much done now by the team and not really "just" by individual central defenders standing all tall and brave through adversity.
It may look that way sometimes sure, but fact is that even the very best defenders in the world will come up short if isolated against good attacking talent.
They need help!
And they get it, from almost the entire team very often, dropping behind the ball or applying pressure, narrowing space, defending their zone. You name it, a good defensive team, do it!

If enough of that defensive play isn't working very well, even the best defender at the time, and according to FIFA the best player even, Fabio Cannavaro, is someone we've seen can go from looking his usual dominant self on a well balanced Italian World Cup winning team, to quite amateurish for his club team, Real Madrid, where exactly the defensive side of the game often wasn't very good.

Simply, if the team doesn't defend well, likely not even the best defender will have a great positive impact, not even at what they do best.
Instead I think there is a very large number of good central defenders out there who on a team that defends well could do a fully adequate job without much of a drop in a quality, and of course that has some value too, but replace an elite forward or midfielder like Messi or Xavi with a say number 25 to 45 player at their position and you'd see a real negative impact and a team definitely less capable.
So even though I definitely admire excellent defending and think there are a lot of defenders capable of it, I just don't see them adding the same value to their teams as some of the great players in other positions do.
Therefore not THAT many central defenders on this list!

I think on this forum in particular, you'll find two schools of thought wrt goalkeeper value. Some will undoubtedly put some keepers in their top 100, while the other won't. Those who don't generally believe that team defense and the back line have a much greater impact on preventing goals than a keeper. Essentially, you can get by with an average keeper if your backline is elite. Conversely, an elite keeper can make the backline look a lot better than they really are (Casillas is frequently cited as an example of this).

In the end for me, dominant outfield players are simply just way more valuable than a keeper and that would definitely be reflected in any list that I may make (which I won't do since it seems like an impossible task). This same topic often comes up when we do drafts as well.

Defenders are just as important as attackers but the difference between someone like Vidic and an average defender isn't nearly as big as when you compare Messi to an average forward. Or maybe there is, but it just doesn't show. There's much more room to showcase brilliance up front than when you're defending.

Or rather: defense is just as important as attack. But it's much more about teamwork etc as you can't do it all by yourself whereas great attackers can sometimes rape teams solo.

But Bjorn kind of exaggerates this, going by what's been said about the topic.

yeah, just to add what Ambush said, there is a reason inferior teams will often play negative defensive football against teams with better talent. Because its easier than trying to out play them and its hard to have a team with elite attacking talent because its rarer and harder to replicate. From a pure value POV I think this alone explains why you see a lot more attacking players listed in top whatever lists.

We really have to do another draft when the season is over.

yeah there has been some talk of doing this, but we've kept it on the DL for now. The last one we did was completely unfun, so hopefully we can get some of the "old" people to join in whenever we do a new one. We were thinking a one year, all league draft fwiw.

Oh my bad, yeah that was the last one but I didn't participate in that. I meant the dynasty one. I'd prefer we get some of the people who participated in the first one year draft we did.

IIRC I saved a spot for both you and BIM, but both of you declined.

Anyway, yeah we'll get it sorted out. End of the season is probably the best.

It would be cool if just a few of you who follow all the major leagues and know your stuff did this to get a true approximation of a good list.

I do think goalkeepers should be included though. The only real reason you guys didn't was because it's hard and not everyone agrees on their value?

I think you're missing something, the entire list is made by 1 guy (Bjorn with a / through the o) and he decided to leave them out of the list. Because they're hard to value compared to other players yeah, I think.

They're also hard to compare to each other because they get so few chances a game to prove themselves so they're basically being rated by their (lack of) mistakes. Plus it's hard to really asses their qualities from just TV - positioning is huge for a GK without being in the stadium.

Yes. What you said is that some people think they are top-100 valuable, and others don't. You are in the "don't" category.

Rather than leaving them out, I think smart people who watch and study a lot of soccer should try to figure out where to include them. I don't know a lot about soccer, so I will abstain from even trying to make my own list, but was asking that others try to.

SAF making it pretty clear when VDS retires this summer he wont make the same mistake he did when the Big Dane retired.
