R1 of wimbeldon is such a joke

change of rules needed to stop wimbeldon paying them £35,000 just to turn up and play 1 set

imagine having paid hundreds of pounds in tickets and seeing a total of 2 and a half sets of fed/djok... wimbeldon need to take a % of the players appearance money and refund the paying customers.

R1 prize money:-

Australian A$50,000
French €35,000
US $43,313

They are roughly the same. Just unlucky that two players have pulled out after each other.

they both come in with injuries knowing they wouldn't be able to complete a game of tennis at any reasonable level

it's a clear money grab, the appearance money means a lot to both those players.

they should offer 50% prize money to a player with an injury who was due to play, which would then allow someone else to come in and actually compete (who would get the other 50%)

the first guy who played djok actually hobbled onto centre court before even hitting a ball!!!

It happens at every tournament. Lowering prize money does not solve that problem.

Most tennis players don't make money to begin with.

Just qualifying is often a big deal.

Pretty much.

They'll still play.

If you start saying, if you go in with an injury then they'll likely just fake an injury/deliberately slip or what have you in order to make it look like they have had an injury during the play in order to get the full amount.

If you qualify for Wimbledon, you play. Or at least try to.

This chick is practically handing the match to Woz

Yeah that was pretty brutal to watch. Played a brilliant second set, broke Woz in the first game of the third, had 40-0 on her own serve and then completely fell apart to end up not winning another game.

Bracket crisis avoided. Woz definitely taking it down now.

My favourite part was when he said he'd give his prize money back if Federer gave back 500m

According to BBC's today article on this very subject - http://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/40497862

Quote:
The men's tour, the ATP, introduced a rule at the start of 2017 that means a player can retire before a first-round match and retain their prize money.

A lucky loser then gets the place and money earned from qualifying, plus any further prize money accrued from the second round onwards.

The rule is not in place at the four Grand Slam tournaments.
Federer and Djoker are quoted as supporting adopting this rule for the majors as well

Yeah **** half the prize money. That would have made no difference today. Give them all of it and give the lucky loser a free chance at rd 2.

I think it's a total disrespect for the sport and spectators turning up for a tournament injuried knowing you won't complete the match. Offer the players 50% of the fee for qualifying, if they turn up and retire then fine them 50% and refund paying customers the rest. (We are the ones out of pocket here) Wimbledon might have more of a chance at getting some R1 matches completed.

Can Donald Young possibly push Rafa? The pipe dream of all pipe dreams. Khachanov my upset pick wouldn't be until R3 which I misrepresented.

Agree they should be given full prize $$.

Pretty amazing how little the top 100-200 ATP $$ winners make, especially compared to golf. When the world #200 has barely cracked $100k halfway through the year, risking any portion of ~$40k is a tough ask.

Brown said of the conditions here at Wimbledon: “I had the feeling that sometimes playing at the*French Open might even be a little faster, just from the balls and the courts. It's a little sad because, personally, I think a lot of guys that are attacking and play serve-and-volley, like*Lopez or Muller are all playing a lot less serve-and-volley. I think that's because everything is playing pretty slow.”

Is Konta a *****? She's in the top ten but the British pubic don't seem to have taken to her or root for her at all compared to the other British ladies. Can't just be the 'not really british' angle as Rusedski was pretty popular.
