yesterday, I'm playing hu on FTP and PS. both sites freeze up. I have to close them down and relaunch.
by the time I get back onto FTP, I've been blinded down a bit (which I think is important, because, for whatever reason, FTP didn't treat it as though I was disconnected like it usually does/should in this situation - I had my full disconnect time bank going in and I relaunched in well under a minute), and when I got back onto Stars I was still on the same hand but I had only 3 seconds left to act so it thought I was still connected as well. HEM also crashed, and didn't even work properly when I relaunched (HUD wasn't working at all). also, when I relaunched, autoimport was still running (?). everything else I was running appeared to be functioning properly/didn't have to relaunch everything else, but I wasn't actively using anything else. my mouse also messed up at the same time, tracking was off and it was difficult to click for about 10 seconds (after which it seemed to pretty much go back to normal though it still seemed off a little).
I'm running Vista 64 on a pretty standard (only upgrades are 4 GB of RAM and a graphics card upgrade to support dual 30s) Dell Studio desktop which I purchased in early 2009.
I had Aero on at the time (have since turned it off), but I've had that running for a few weeks now and haven't had this problem despite playing daily w/ the exact same programs running.
I haven't installed anything new recently. new HEM upgrade the same day before playing, but I played for hours w/ the upgrade w/o any problem. I never use the system for anything but playing and 2+2, and I'm certain I was running the same stuff I always run (the same stuff I've been running all year w/o a problem). think there was also an FTP update, but no problems directly after that either.
I finished out my games and then ran a SAS scan (nothing came back but the usual tracking cookie). also ran Avira scan, nothing came back. not suggesting I think it was anything that either of those scans would catch, but I don't really know how to troubleshoot an issue like this and it seemed natural to run the scans
I tried to include all relevant details. please let me know what other info you need, if any
anyone have any idea what could have caused this? is it likely a problem w/ my OS/software or could it just be a lack of resources?
I've never had this happen before. it cost me about $400 in equity, so, if it happens again, I'll prolly just buy a new computer or reinstall the OS. if it's likely due to a lack of resources, I will get a more powerful system immed and will stop using Aero. this could have easily cost me much more than $400, I was fortunate to only have 2 games running. if this happens a few more times, I'm very likely to lose more than the cost of a brand new top of the line system
as far as it being a potential lack of resources, I'm not sure I understand how that could be the problem, as, afaik, a relatively new bottom of the line desktop w/ 4 GB of RAM should be able to power what I'm running. my HEM db isn't big at all, less than 60k hands. Aero def made my system a little slower (I've got task manager in tray at all times and it seemed to be filled w/ more green than it used to be since I started using Aero, which I believe is standard), but, as I said, Aero hasn't caused a crash like this before
I will stop using Aero. I am also open to installing XP if that's what's recommended. I only care about performance and stability at this point.
here's a list of what I launch when I start sessions:
Calculator
Chrome
Firefox
FTP
HEM
Pidgin
PlaceMint
PS
Keyboard_Redirect AHK script
some text documents (Notepad++ and Notepad) and a JPEG
sorry for the long post. this is a major problem for me and I need to take steps to fix it immed
really appreciate any advice
I am starting a
thread for this in CTH. feel free to respond there. wanted to post it here as well. can start a new thread here if you guys think it would be appropriate. thank you
