I've been wanting to make my own version of PJ for a while now since there are never updates or new features. But it always does what I've needed it to do. Now it seems like it may be time to make the switch (or make my own version...)

So tonight when I play I'm testing out Run Good, Poker Grinder and Poker Income. If I don't find one I like then I'm going to start to work on making my own version.

Everytime I get a new iPhone, I always have trouble with something or other. It always causes me such grief, but I hate change, and don't like the idea of trying to learn a new phone.

I called Apple today and had the same issue as everyone else, of course and the Apple guy had to get a senior tech to help me out with the whole 'signing out of iTunes and signing back in' to get rid of PJ icon being "stuck," and killing the f out of my battery.

My whole iPhone crapped out last year and the problem was determined to be a "faulty" back up, which meant I had to get rid of absolutely everything. All my text messages, all the stuff I had in my notes, all the stuff in PJ. I had to start from scratch because I couldn't go from my backup. And I don't know how to email myself backups and stuff.

Anyways, for all you guys saying "make sure to back up your PJ once in awhile" ....do you guys just mean an iTunes backup? I do that every couple weeks when I download new songs. And I was just assuming once PJ is up and running again, I was just going to download it through icloud and everything would be there.

I always try to export a back up to my email occasionally through PJ. You can also back up your apps in iTunes which would also back up the SQLite database from the app which is where all of your data is stored. Not sure if that back up will help if we can't install that version to have on the phone for when we do the update to fix ios8.

If anyone has issues with dates when importing from PJ, make sure your clock format is 12 hour and not 24 hour. Just had a flawless import into Run Good after switching clock format. The Run Good developer said a fix is on the way, too.

Maybe this will resolve the issue?

I am writing to inform you of current and serious issue with Poker Journal on iOS8.

First of all, I am sending this to as broad a list as possible. If you are not a Poker Journal user, you do not need to continue reading this. If you would rather not get emails from me, please email me, and I will remove you from my notification list.

As many of you have already written to me, iOS 8 is not currently compatable with Poker Journal. This is not due to any code issue that I have control of. This is due to a defect in iOS 8. Poker Journal will not install on a device that is using iOS8. This is due to a defect in the operation system. I have been working with Apple to figure out what is going on, but my most recent communication with them simply told me to file a bug report with apple and they are providing no further information. I am still trying to get them to respond. So far, they are not cooperating.

I will continue to try to get them to provide more information. I would also urge you to contact Apple and complain directly to them. This is a problem with iOS 8.

If you are affected by this issue, please read the rest of this email for urgent information. This is time critical inforormation if you are using iCloud to backup your data. (see below)

I recommend the following:
If you have NOT already upgraded to iOS 8, and you use Poker Joural... Wait. I will send you an email when this is resolved.

If you HAVE already upgraded, you may want to read this article (http://www.macworld.com/article/2687...downgrade.html OR http://www.iphonehacks.com/2014/09/d...ios-7-1-2.html) and consider downgrading. This may or may not be possible, but if you really need to run Poker Journal, this will be the only option until Apple resolves the issue. (Assuming you do not have access to a device with iOS7 or earlier.
WARNING: I cannot be responsible for any data loss that comes with this procedure.
Please understand that you proceed at your own risk!

As far as your DATA:
If you have used Poker Journal to backup your data and hav the backup email, rest assured, this email contains your Poker Journal database, and once Poker Journal is working again on your device, you will be able to restore your data from this email. (Kep it safe.)

If you Backup your device to iTunes. You will be able to restore your data from the iTunes backup once Poker Journal is working on your device again. If for some reason this does not restore, there are tools to go into the backup file and recover the Poker Journal database from the backup file from iTunes. Contact me for more information about the tools to do so. (free version of http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com works well)

If you backup your devices to iCloud ONLY. Then there are some things that you can do to help protect your Poker Journal data from being removed from your iCloud backup.
- The most important thing that you can do is TURN OFF iCLOUD backup from your device. From what I understand, iCloud keeps the most recent THREE backup files from your device. If you turn off your backups, then you are less likeley to have the backup that contains your Poker Journal data removed.

- Use a utility to Download your backup files from iCloud.
I am not sure the best answer for getting your backup from iCloud. There are some utilites for downlaoding and extracting files from your iCloud account... though they are not cheap. The one that looks most likely to work is:
http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com (cost $70)
I have not yet tried this, but hope to try it to verify that it works. If this works, and if you would like me to try to extract from your iCloud account so you don't have to, I am willing to try, but.. this would require you giving me your iCloud login. (I certainly can be trusted, but I would probably not be comfortable giving my apple ID and login to anyone personally.) If you want to know if this worked, please drop me an email, and I will update you as soon as i have tested this.

there is a free version, but it only works on iTunes backups, NOT iCloud. I have tested this, and I was able to extract a PJ database file from an iTunes backup. this is probably the easisiest way to get the file from that backup file.

I have tried another utility (http://www.recovery-transfer.com) but this did not find the sqlite file that is the database for poker journal. It looks like a cool free tool for accessing other data types from your iCloud backup, but not for PokerJournal.

These are the only two that I have seen so far...

There are tools that will get your data file back onto your device once Poker Journal is working on your device again If you get to this stage, email me and I will send you instructions on how to do this.

OR

If through any of the steps above you are able to get your Poker Joural database, If you are willing to send it to me, I will convert your data to a csv file that can be opened in Excel, or perhaps imported into another poker tracking program. (I would hate to loose you as a user, but I understand how difficult this must be.)

I wish I had better news for you. I hope Apple is comes around and becomes more responsive. I suspect they have their hands full with having to pull and update for iOS 8 already...

If you know anyone who uses Poker Journal, feel free to forward this email to them, or tell them to email me to get onto my notification list.

If I can answer any other questons, please do not hestiate to contact me.

My appologies,
Michael Golden

I appreciate that the developer is following up on this reaching out to the app users about saving their data.

And I can't reasonably expect that I somehow deserve a rushed urgent fix for an app that I paid $10 for 3 years ago.

But this response strikes me as not quite right. While I'm sure it is true that iOS8 changed or broke something core to this app, I don't think it is reasonable to expect Apple to fix it, unless it is a widespread problem. And I'm not aware of a wide variety of other apps with this install problem. (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.)

When Apple changes stuff, it is up to the developer to keep up. Even if it is a "bug", if it doesn't impact a lot of other users, it's just not going to get fixed.

Is Michael saying that there is literally no code he could change in the app that would make it compatible with iOS8 currently? Because that sounds crazy.

Maybe the problem is core to how Poker Journal is designed, and fixing it would be a giant pain in the ass, and not worth the cost and effort to him. That could be true, although it probably suggests some real flaws in how the app is architected.

In any case, I am not a developer, so I would welcome someone who knows better than me to weigh in on this.

And again, I am a fan and long time paid user of the app, and I would not suggest the Michael Golden owes me anything. But I would be disappointed to have to switch to something else.

The app is still for sale in the app store. If he stopped selling it and told everyone he's not supporting the app anymore and to use it at your own risk or switch to something else, then he doesn't owe you anything. As is, he does, but the solution is pretty simple for the developer.

There are plenty of us that would pay a yearly subscription for this app with the idea that it would be regularly maintained and updated, or he could sell the app to a developer that is willing to support the app.

It's not cool to keep an app in the store and drag your feet on operating system updates. As far as I know, developers get apple ios updates weeks in advance of a release specifically so they can update and test their apps.

All of the apps I've developed for iOS7 still work fine for iOS8 even though they're not using the iOS8 SDK (which would be the case with PJ). Most of the time breaks in apps come when a developer takes the old app and "recompiles" it using a new SDK. If he would've submitted an update to patch iOS8 bugs and it didn't install it would have never gotten past the review phase of submitting to the App Store, but instead his app was already there. So I believe him when he says it's a problem with iOS/Apple and not necessarily his code iOS7.

Update: I talked with a friend who is an ios8 developer, and he said that install/update is entirely apple's domain, and there is very little a developer can do if this doesn't work.

So I rescind my previous comments.

So, we should all complain to Apple. How? I'm not sure.

But obviously, Apple should not be selling an app in their store that doesn't install.

Presumably Apple should want to resolve this one way or another, even if it means removing the app and informing the developer what, if anything, can be done to get it into compliance with ios8.

Thanks to everyone being so helpful and Michael himself for addressing the current issues.

I have my PJ files backed up on itunes. I downloaded iphone Backup Extractor and trying to figure out how to get my data that is backed up on itunes. I would like to be able to restore my data and either view it on a different app or get a hard copy of the files that is needed to view on a different poker app. I have no way of viewing these files as both my ipad and iphone has iOS 8 installed. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I'm somewhat relieved to find this thread. I spent the better part of four hours at my local Apple Store today trying to figure out why my phone wouldn't sync correctly. The initial issue started when I tried to download iOS 8 and it got stuck part way thru. I then had to wipe my phone and restore from a backup (I backedup my iPhone 5 to both iCloud and my iTunes before downloading iOS 8). I had three pages worth of apps, with PJ being in the third row of my first page of apps. The only apps that appeared on my phone after restoring from backup were those on the first page, up until PJ. The apps on the first page following PJ and the apps on pages two and three wouldn't show up at all. Those that did show up were greyed out and wouldn't fully load, and when clicked on said "waiting". I could hold down and delete the apps and redownload them, but that's a PITA.

Though I'm probably way lower in terms of hours plugged into PJ, I've been playing 20 hour weeks for the past 4 months, all tracked on PJ. To think that all that information is potentially lost really sucks. Hoping for a fix soon and will be checking back here frequently.

This may help some of you guys getting your data if you have an iTunes backup with PJ.

1. Download one of the iTunes backup extractors mentioned earlier in this thread. http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com/ works well and has a free version (you should be able to do enough to get your database). This one also works well but is only for Mac http://www.imactools.com/iphonebackupviewer/.

2. Open iTunes Backup in Extractor/Viewer and find PokerJournal App. This will be different for different software but is pretty straight forward. You will have to find Applications or Apps. Once you find Poker Journal you will need to find the SQLite database file and extract that.

*Your backupfiles are in here as well if you just want those to open on another device that has ios7.

With iPhone Backup Extractor you will have to go into "Expert Mode" -> Application -> com.yourcompany.PokerJournal -> Documents -> PJ2_0.sqlite

*I was able to get my ~1k sessions using the free version of iPhone Backup Extractor...

3. Download SQLite Manger add-on for Firefox - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...qlite-manager/

Open Firefox and go to Tools -> SQLite Manager. Click the folder/open icon and find your .sqlite database you extracted earlier and open it. This will have all of your data in it including other stuff like your Locations, Games, Filters, Bankrolls, etc. The table with your actual session data is in the ZSESSION table.

If you want to export that data and import into Excel you could right click/apple click ZSESSION and go to Export Table (make sure its set to CSV) then click Ok. You may even be able to import that .CSV file into other Apps that can import PJ data. I haven't tried this but it seems like this would be the table PJ would export as a backup. If you do try to import into another app make sure you've got backups of your data and do this at your own risk!!

Anyway, hope this makes sense and helps some of you guys get your PJ data back!

Cheers!

Yes. I had to download my icloud backup through this software since they were otherwise corrupt trying to use them in a restore on ios7. The icloud download took between 4 and 5 hours. Then, I found sqlite file, sent it to Michael, and he returned back with a csv.

I could do it with code but not sure about Excel

Did a quick search on Stack Overflow and found this and seems to be the formula you need. I didn't test it but should be a good starting point...

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9...etime-in-excel

Specifically this...

"=Datevalue(text)+timevalue(text) Go into different types of date formats and choose dd-mm-yyyy mm:ss am/pm"

Glad the data dump worked for you! Hopefully this helps as well.

Didn't read the whole thread, but just wanted to say that PJ won't download from my backup on Itunes or from the App store when disconnected. I tried to download IOS 8.02 two days ago, and I had to end up doing a restore and then downloading my backup. I had multiple issues trying to download my apps, and it does appear that PJ is the problem.

Thanks for the help. I finally was able to locate the PJ2_0.sqlite file. Now what do i do with it to be able to "read" and recover the data from this sqlite file? I use google chrome. Do i need to download firefox SQLite Manger add, if I don't use firefox?

Any help in restoring this data and just basically plug it into a software that's 2nd best to Poker Journal? It seems Poker Income comes a distant 2nd to Poker Journal, but any software that restores the backup files from the PJ_0.sqlite file will do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I've been spending way too much time and being stressed because of the 6k+ hours I have logged in here. I am not very familiar with coding and programming and don't know how excel comes into play. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for everyone's help in this thread.
