Make sure you got the actual drivers and codec pack installed, and DirectX. Run dxdiag and test DirectSound, DirectMusic etc.
You can in-/decrease the output volume of each channel (i.e. wave, line etc) in the system volume settings.
I know very little about computers my cousin set up this pc for me when I got it. What does Directx have to do with the sounds? I don't have DirectX installed on this PC unless it came with it. And you're referring to said drivers and codec pack for DirectX right? I'll try playing the sounds in Winamp.
