New Game: The Big O With A Twist New Game: The Big O With A Twist

Discussion thread for a modified version of the already-modified version of Omaha/8. Looking for experienced Omaha/8 players to provide thoughts and feedback. Will post hands, try and develop strategy, perhaps extend a game invite to other posters, for a live local cash game of this sort I've been playing that I find fascinating.

Game is Omaha/8, NL cash, live $0.50/$1.00, no max on the buy in.

Parameters are as follows:

Players are dealt either 5, 6, or 7 cards. Dealer chooses, but this is obviously governed by # of players at the table. If 6 or fewer players, 7 cards is possible, whereas 8 or 9 players means you can only be dealt 5, etc.

Preflop, you act, and then discard until you're down to 5 cards. (Start with 5 cards and you keep all 5. Start with 6, discard 1. Start with 7, discard 2)

Flop/turn/river, you're now playing normal Omaha/8 with 5 cards, BUT you can make a hand via either option:

- standard Omaha rules, specifically two-in-hand and three on the board;
OR
- you can play all five of your hole cards as a complete hand (i.e, you are dealt KKK44, you have Kings full. If you're dealt A2345r, you have a wheel/nut low).

Note that under this structure, the concept of "the nuts" ceases to exist. You can identify the nuts with respect to the board, for example, you hold JTxxx on a board of KQ942r, but you would lose to anyone who shows down AKQJT, a flush, or a house+ in their hand, and chop with anyone who has a low in their hand.
-------------------------------------------

Basically, although I've been doing well thusfar in this game - the level of play is utterly miserable - I'd like to do better and develop strategy, starting hand requirements, better ways to read, etc. For example:

How hard in the 7-cards-dealt version should we be playing a made low hand like 8-6-5-3-2, if at all?
How hard should we be playing a trips-in-hand holding if we have something like QQQ54 (very little chance of improvement)?
Do hands like KJJTTr have value?
Raising and 3-betting requirements?
If we're lucky enough to be dealt a wheel, what line do we take to maximize value?

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

You can assume average hand strength by looking at showdowns in stud hi poker. To me, playing 3 streets doesn't make much sense as the board rather becomes irrelevant if somebody catches a flush right away. However, the play should be rather poor if nobody has much experiency with the math behind it.

You should call this game Camelot. Tis a silly place.

I would get drunk and play this. Sounds fun.

It's quite fun, but can also be very profitable if you play well and pick your spots. Not big stakes obviously, but I've seen plenty of people drop 7, 8, 9 buy-ins during a session.

Guess the mods can just go ahead and close this thread up, since there are clearly no serious responses forthcoming.
