Club Frustrated

I am getting really peeved off at the present. As most of you are probably aware I am trying to learn LO8 and play correctly but I continually see people playing absolute crap (on Stars) and they are the ones with the big stacks.

In the $1.10 tourney today there was a maniac (93%) who played any double suited hands from any position. He was the big stack at the table. Then there was a woman who played garbage from any position and she was the second big stack.

Here is my last hand in the tournament. Bad beat or bad play?

PokerStars - $1+$0.10|200/400 Hi/Lo - Omaha - 7 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

MP: 2,047.00
CO: 2,242.00
BTN: 5,585.00
SB: 4,730.00
Hero (BB): 1,027.00
UTG: 2,824.00
UTG+1: 6,270.00

SB posts SB 100.00, Hero posts BB 200.00

Pre Flop: (300.00) Hero has 9 T 5 8

fold, fold, fold, fold, BTN calls 200.00, SB calls 100.00, Hero checks

Flop: (600.00, 3 players) 9 4 J
SB checks, Hero bets 200.00, BTN calls 200.00, SB calls 200.00

Turn: (1200.00, 3 players) 7
SB checks, Hero bets 400.00, BTN calls 400.00, SB calls 400.00

River: (2400.00, 3 players) J
SB checks, Hero bets 227.00 and is all-in, BTN raises to 400.00, fold

BTN shows 4 Q 6 J (Full House, Jacks full of Fours) (Pre 53%, Flop 59%, Turn 10%)
Hero shows 9 T 5 8 (Straight, Jack High) (Pre 47%, Flop 41%, Turn 90%)
BTN wins 2,854.00

Any information appreciated.

Re: Frustrated

That's just a cooler, bro. Even if you hold back on the flop it's all going in later anyway.

Would be curious to see what else is going on with you. I also get frustrated.

Re: Frustrated

Just tough luck, the button made a poor call on the turn.

Poker is like being a hitter in baseball. Even if you're an excellent player, most of the time you're going to be "frustrated".

Re: Frustrated

So you're complaining that he had you beat preflop, on the flop, and on the river?

And when you only had 5 BB?

I'm short stacked and I get a favourable flop!

I should fold?

Re: Frustrated

I like the way you played it, grunta0.
Villian's turn call wasn't very good.
tough luck. hope you at least enjoy the challange/competition,
because you're not going to be rich (or probably even be able to build a serious bankroll) from 1$ tournaments. just sayin...

in any case, good luck to you.

Re: Frustrated

This isn't a favourable flop (IMHO). The best possible turn card came and you still lost. You've got middle pair, and a draw to two straights; one of which is the wrong end, and the other will be the current nuts but there will be lots of redraws out against you.

Not necessarily suggesting you shouldn't bet it though, I'll leave that advice for the LO8 tourney specialists

don't need to be a LO8 tourney specialist to know that decent pot equity+decent fold equity=profitable bet.

Re: Frustrated

Well the tournament situation might matter, cEV and $EV can be very different. And I'm not sure how much fold equity you have betting 200 into a 600 pot, 3-handed in a $1 tournament

Op, this might be too harsh, youve still got a stack that is workable especially in a split tournament. But why choose to get involved when your high hand is likely going to be a split PLUS its got the dreaded 9 card that catches so many better high broadway draws. Then your low hand is really a reach.

Im not saying your hand doesnt play well, but with your stack you should be looking for premium suited cards, or all wheel cards for a scoop, or a nice foursome of focused broadway cards.

fwiw, Theres lots of ways to get there. When you see how someones playing, let the right cards come your way before you try and go after them. A lot of times the crazies have some small edge that works for them. Learn it, use it against them at the right time.

Re: Frustrated

I'm not sure it matters much what you do when you already have 20% of your stack in the pot and hit a pair/OESD/BDFD on a 1 low card flop.
All options are bad, and there probably isn't a lot of difference between any 3 of them (without great reads).

Against a big stack 90% player you have much less fold equity than against a sane person. Certainly I'd expect any better hand to call, so I'd check flop ... and I'd seriously consider folding except we have 20% of our stack in the pot already.

The best outcome is if you can bet 400 into 600 on the turn, but after you bet the flop it's 400 into 1,200 and again I don't see villains folding much of anything.

Again, not if BTN is playing 90% of hands.

Re: Frustrated

"miss" in the sense that there are less reasons to call a bet:
no low draw, no flush draw, only few straight draws...
