PLO8 - Tournaments VS Cash? PLO8 - Tournaments VS Cash?

Broad topic... but what are some adjustments to playing a PLO8 tournament vs playing cash? I generally dislike tournaments, but will probably play the wsop $1500 PLO8 event this summer as well as a PLO8 wsop circuit event in may. Just looking for any bits of advice.

Idk if it's so much a PLO8 thing but more a tournament thing. As you approach the money you're trying to avoid high variance plays and not getting involved in hands lightly. You're really trying to hold on and it's less about chip accumulation at that point and more about surviving - or outlasting the others.

On the other hand, cash poker is chip accumulation basically all the time. I'd say treat the tournament opening and mid stages as accumulation phases and the late stages as survival. But if you get a big stack early on, you don't need to keep trying to accumulate, it's OK to just sit back and let the tournament catch up with you.

Hopefully you can pick up some good spots to pad your stack towards the end and pick a few players off. Once you get into the money you can open up a tad and try and win a few pots to get a comfortable stack size if you haven't already got one.

In tournaments you always should keep an eye out for stack sizes and prefer to not play big pots against people that cover you. I read when I was first learning poker in tournaments the best stacks to attack are middle stacks. The shorties are desperate and will try to make a stand, the big stacks can call you for fun, whereas the mid stacks are trying to bide their time and ladder up.

I think as well there is no shame in holding on for dear life to mincash if the prospect of doing better is very slim. A win is a win.

More on point with O8 I think when trying to avoid high variance it pays to not be calling big all ins and 3 bets and to try to get as few chips in preflop as possible. Obviously as a short stack you have to do that because you don't really have any choice but when you do have a choice, err on the side of caution IMO. So even with really nice starting hands like ds AK2x it's not terrible to just call raises pre or to limp behind. The only exception I suppose is when you're on a steal and think you can take it down pre from late position. Obviously if a man is always calling all the raises from the blinds then there's no point in stealing and you may as well just limp in and play poker in position for the cost of 1bb.

And I think it's probably better to play tighter than you might in a cash game from early position.

In terms of opening raise sizes I think you can definitely go smaller in the mid to late stages because it can still take down the blinds pre for less chips than a standard pot sized open that you might do in a cash game.

In omaha tournaments you will frequently play strong hands less agressively than cash because managing stack size and reducing variance is so important (especially vs weaker fields)

You also become incentivized to take high-risk plays you would infrequently take in cash when you fall below average stacks at higher levels, its very important to recognize spots where getting it in with junky 4 card hards is correct (normally isolated a strong hand with lots of antes and to squeeze out blinds)
