New player, how do low hands work? New player, how do low hands work?

Played PLO for a while and looking into Hi/Lo, but I'm confused on low hands. Can you use all your hole cards to make a lo or is it still only 2 cards in your hand and 3 community cards?

EX: You have A234 on a 587KQ runout. Is your low hand A2345 or A2587?

If an ace hits river instead of queen is your low hand disqualified since you have top pair or do you still have the A2xxx low hand?

Sorry for such a basic question, I am just a bit confused here

Use two cards from your hand, three on the board. You can use different combinations for high vs low.

So your low is A2578

If an ace hit the river, your low would be A(from the board)23(from hand)57. Still the nut low. This is why having multiple wheel cards in your hand is so important.

See the pinned FAQ in this subforum -- how to read the low hand.

You must use 2 of your cards, three from the board. The wheel (A2345) is the nut low (straight does not count in O8).

In your scenario - you have the nut now - A2, plus the board's three low cards for A2587. It's not possible for someone to have a lower low, but there could be ties (two lows = "being quartered").

You're not going to get an easier example than the one you provided. The trickier lows are when there are shared cards.

For instance:

YOU: A256
VILLAIN: 34KJ

BOARD: KK258

In this scenario you get scooped as the trip Kings takes high and Villain's 35 low bests your A6 (your 2 and 5 don't play).

"Live" cards are even trickier to read.

YOU: A356
VILLAIN: 2356

Board: 34568

In this scenario, Villain wins high (23456) but your "live Ace" takes the low over Villain's "live deuce"..... or A3456 vs 23456.

Fun game. Enjoy!
