As I said, I can't comment on the strat because I didn't get that far. And yes, I could have skipped all the BS, but that's just not how I roll with books. /OCD
Fair enough!
I thought the book was a little too basic as well but they did advertise it (somewhere) as a "beginners" book.

Being a beginner I found it informative if a bit nitty. (Is this a word?)

For example (if I remember correctly) it says not to raise in early/middle position.

Was he talking about full ring games? If so, I guess that isn't so nitty. Or is it?

As you are well aware I'm not the one to answer this question but I would think in any game it would be nitty to not raise with AA23DS in any position.

Can you learn anything online through this forum, articles and videos that you would be able to learn in any of these books?

Yes. But the material in a good book is better organized for a newb learning the game.

Omaha 8 or better winning at Hi-Low Poker

Just saw this book whilst browsing on Amazon. It appears to be geared towards relatively new players to O8 and wondered if anyone else has had a look? Am tempted to buy (useful for HORSE and the 8 game if nothing else) but not sure how much will be new in here?

Welcome to the forum, lillywhite.

We have a book containment thread. I'll merge your thread with that thread.

I like Bobby Baldwin's section in Super System II about O8.

I'd say like this:

1. Dan Deppen: Pot Limit Omaha 8 Revealed, Expanded Edition. The whole book just about PLO8!

2. Jeff Hwang: Pot Limit Omaha Poker, The Big Play Strategy, chapter 9, pages 277-313. Just one chapter, but appears to have quality! Always nice to have a short version you could read in one day.

3. Mark Tenner and Lou Krieger: Mastering Omaha Poker, chapter 21, pages 161-174. Just some pages, but is worth a look. A bit more extensive than the tips on the internet.

Anybody knowing about any substantial PLO8 content in any other book? Saw two pages each in Ray Zee's High-Low-Split Poker and Bob Ciaffone's Omaha Poker.

"Omaha 8 or Better: Winning at Hi-Low Poker", by Andy Mack. That was the book in your thread title before it got moved here. Haven't read that book, didn't know it existed, released this year. You learn something new every day...it's aimed at limit play, so it will not fill up my personal book collection at the moment, concentrating on PLO8. But guess new books always have value, they are taking into account how the games have changed.

Re: book containment thread

Hi everyone

I bought this Kindle book and found it an entertaining and useful guide to O8 Limit. I've played a bit of this before purchasing and it has helped my game. I have posted a review on both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk for anyone interested in finding out more.

Re: book containment thread

Hello all. Thanks Deepster and others for the comments. "Omaha 8 or Better: Winning at Hi-Low Poker" covers Limit 08 and is intended for stakes from micro up to $2-4 online, or $4-8 live. I ran a number of my hands through the forum before publishing to get views, so thank you to all of you who contributed! If you are already a strong winning or high stakes 08 player, then I'll be honest this may not be the book for you. But if you are playing at the lower levels, I hope it may be of interest. I'm happy to respond to any questions.

Best,
Andy Mack

Are there any good PLO8 books for experienced players out there?

I'm also interested in books that deal with how to beat the FLO8 cash game tables at a decent rate.

Thumbs up Re: book containment thread

So yes Andy Mack's book Omaha 8 or Better: Winning at Hi-Low Poker is a good start - NOTE: I also declare my self-interest as I helped publish it.
I'm a weak microstakes player, have read and follow the guidelines in it. One place I vary is that I virtually never open limp pre. Perhaps I should start as getting anyone to release anything pre in the hopes of having a heads up pot is an uphill struggle. I would say it's definitely enough to consistently beat micro and low stakes.
Playing FLO8 in the mixed games (8-game on Stars specifically) I am amazed at the basic mistakes a good % of players make with fundamentals such as starting hand selection. If in PLO the most common beginners' mistake is to overvalue 'NLH' hands (e.g. bad aces or two 'ok' nlh hands such as KQ and 66), then in FLO8 it is to fall in love with strong PLO hands such as JT98ds which is pretty much one-way junk in that game.
There is an incredible paucity of literature on how to play the game properly and FL is a lot different to PL where it is both easier to get away from hands and to take others off them. The book is a guide on how to play pre, through the streets and dealing with common player types rather than a preflop odds bible. Personally I think this approach is much more useful at lower stakes, but of course others can judge!

Wow, I'm surprised you've read all those and not the Ray Zee or ss2...

That's like me asking a first time LA poker vacationer which poker rooms they went to while they were here, and they tell me: "Hollywood park, normandie, Diamond Jim's in Lancaster, and..... crystal park."

Re: book containment thread

I've read the Bill Boston one and it's mainly based on work he did establishing the hand rankings, useful information, but not a lot of real content there. It does show you just how useless hands like Kings with no low draw are or middling rundowns ...

Re: book containment thread

I think this hasn't posted yet:

The Full Tilt Poker Strategy Guide: Tournament Edition

This book is focused on MTT play and it has an O8 chapter written by Mike Matusow (19 pages only ).

One of the best PLO8 players I know told (on a session review video) that he found some interesting ideas in that chapter. BTW I found it interesting too.

I watched some old videos on stoxpoker with some guys, campfirewest and predator006. About the only thing I can find on strategy. Dan Deppen has that book also.
