Hey There,

In the last few weeks I have played over 100 MTT's on Poker Stars and was feeling like I was just running bad. It seemed that over and over again I would get it in good and lose. Now I understand that this is part of the game but it is getting to the point that I am about to just give up.

In any case I decided to make sure I wasn't just playing bad or tilting so I looked up my All-In Equity graph from PT. As I suspected It looks like I am playing well and just running really bad. Is this type of bad streak common? Is my sample size to small? Am I blowing this out of proportion? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am about to give up. I mean if I play well and get it in good and keep losing what's the point?

Equity Graph:

It seems like my image is not showing. It can be seen here:

Thanks,
Stephen

All in Equity graph for MTTs has a very limited value. That said, sample of 100 MTTs is very small and you shouldn't sweat it. If you are playing well results will follow, but downswings in MTTs can be very, very brutal even for the best players out there.

Thanks for the post. I did do a lot of research on the exact meaning of the graph and understand where it falls short. And yes 100 tourneys is a small sample size it's just really frustrating to go through this. I guess I am just going to have to sweat it out and stick with my game. Hopefully the graph will begin to converge soon

Playing well and "getting it in good" are just parts of winning. Luck is a huge factor as well, especially with a small sample size.

The best you can do in MTT play is play well and hope for the best. I go into MTT tourneys (especially large ones) fully expecting to have a bad beat put me out of the tournament. A lot of the time, this is exactly what happens, but it's important to keep putting yourself in good spots. Remember though, even if you do everything right, you will still lose a very high % of the time.

I would play another 400 mtts and then have a look at the situation again on a bigger sample.

Sounds good. Unless of course I keep running bad!

getting it in bad is a stupid advice. am 50% ROI after like 2.4k games, so I guess i'm a winning player. i played 270 tournaments in january (with 19BB/100) with rake back i won/lost 0 bucks. ****ty month, ****ty variance. however, one time i had this going on for six month. the only one making money is stars (like 100 bucks). i hope it will change soon or i will start playing FPS games which at least provide some fun. my graph looks as ****ty as yours too.

gl bro!!

Thanks man! It really is frustrating when I know I am playing well and invest so much of my time playing these tourneys only to have variance slap me in the face. The thing is the graph should theoretically converge as the hands played goes to infinity but in reality, as you mentioned, there is no guarantee of that. Let me know how it turns out and best of luck to you!

Thanks everyone for contributing your thoughts. The good news is I stuck with my game and eventually the graphs converged on the positive side and I have been doing really well and even took first in a tourney the other day. So I guess the lesson is when you run bad just stick to your game and eventually you will get through it

I think a bigger sample size would help for sure, however, don't overlook the fact that while you think you are playing well, you might have developed a leak or two that if reviewing HH and talking with trusted friends, you might find that you are not playing as well as you may have thought. This has happened to me, and after a HH review from an objective friend, I thought differently. Good luck!
