Re: Anyone ever get bored of poker?

Seriously, take a break! Give yourself time to switch off fro poker completely. You'll come back feeling extra fresh and motivated. Playing day in day out really does grind you down eventually

Anything will become mundane if done for long enough, IMO.

Re: Anyone ever get bored of poker?

Anything that you spend a lot of time with can get boring sometimes, even if it's a great job or something that you love to do.

Playing scales on a musical instrument can be boring. Some football players love studying game film but for others it is simply a required task. Doctors read medical journals to keep up with developments in the field.

I use flash cards to memorize equities, hand ranges and different tournament situations. I have to force myself to study those things, but at a short table it's really nice that I know, for example, what the chances are that I have the only ace at the table.*

Anything that you do often can sometimes be boring. Doctors probably get tired of their hypochondriacal patients. There are times where a marathon runner doesn't feel like doing his 12-mile training run that day.

For me, poker is all about grinding, both playing and studying. But when I do the work, the results will come. Those results, in the form of dollars, make it all with it.

-------

*Five opponents is the breakeven point where you have a 50% chance of holding the only ace. You are more and more likely to hold the only ace as players are knocked out.

Played live cash game $1/$2 NL with a cap of 500 BBs...

8 hours straight with no bathroom break. Still not bored.

Gotta make that money!

My life doesn't revolve around whether I have the only ace, but it's an important piece of information. So is knowing how many outs I have to hit my draw, or keeping track of the pot size in a live game. Everything that I know matters.

If I'm in a hand with an opponent who studies a lot of more than I do, I'm probably the fish. I don't want to be the fish.

Re: Anyone ever get bored of poker?

I sometimes experience a strong sense of poker boredom, but that usually stems from times that I'm spending too much time playing, and I know most of you feel there is no such thing as "too much" time on poker but there is, ha. I've been there. I recommend taking a mini break from it before it becomes tedious instead of fun. Whenever I get bored playing it in a physical sense I will spend my time reading more ways to enhance my poker playing skills which will then make the game more fun since I'll become excited to try out my new strategies I've learned.

Just a few weeks ago I downloaded some kindle books off of amazon and read through them quick and then read a bunch of different poker blogs to see what else is out there, I learned some really cool strategies from pokerhack.com and other various poker sites. It helped get me excited to play all over again like I was a brand new player. :-)

I wonder what is going on... Any advice? Anyone else relate?
I would think that people on a winning streak would never get bored. However, when one is into a three month losing streak boredom would come quite easily. Because the armchair psychologist in me thinks that putting in all of that effort -- and still having nothing to show for it -- plays into the very psychological mindset of poker. I mean, it's okay to be in a losing streak, but having a winning session or two or three is great for the old ego.

I son,t know if any of this pertains to you, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

Re: Anyone ever get bored of poker?

Get back in there and get back to scooping pots.
Raking in those chips after taking down a hand definitely subconsciously motivates me to get after it day after day. Recommend changing up where you play, try a different room if available.

Interesting. My preference, both live and online, is long, slow, deepstack tournaments. That's partly because they fit the way I play (I play a lot of speculative hands and stacks need to be reasonably deep for a while for that to work) and because I don't get tired when other people do, which gives me an edge.

When a live tournament starts at 1800 and we're still playing at midnight, I love it when people are complaining about how tired they are. It's like they are saying, "Clif, I'm going to give you my chips now." I don't play if I'm not rested and I usually take a nap before long tournament. I'm always ready to play for eight hours and not miss a hand.

It's especially interesting for me when someone in their late teens or early 20s is playing and they get all worn out. I'm 61 and I'm ready to go for a couple more hours. Energy is not a problem for me. I'm going to run my second marathon in 2018.

Re: Anyone ever get bored of poker?

I never thought I'd be able to take-or-leave online poker, as I got hooked a few years back. However over time I find I am less able to focus on the game, and find myself doing things in the background. However I still love the game and I wrote poker software for myself, and found I was enjoying that much more than playing. I just launched the software commercially, as it happens. I think I'll start playing more online again at some point, as these things can come in waves, it's the same with chess and other activities.

Re: Anyone ever get bored of poker?

Yes, after nearly four years of playing I have gotten bored of poker.

I haven't played poker since January and my life is so much better. Seriously, poker is kind of a drag. I use to believe that I would become a multi millionaire from playing poker because I'm smart. Turns out it takes a lot more. You pretty much have to be obsessed to be successful. I have this weird obsession with making a lot of money. Always thinking about the future. I'm kind of greedy I suppose. After giving it a rest I have become a much happier person.

I may return to poker someday, but as of now meh.
