This may be an unusual one...but I was hoping someone could give me a book recommendation.

Scenario: You've promised to put your girlfriend in a few local live tournaments ($50-$75 b/i level.) Your girlfriend is a super-high IQ med student w/ strong mathematical skills...so she should have a favorable learning curve. She knows the rules of poker, but has no strategic knowledge other than "position is good"

She can spend a total of 3 hours reading beforehand. What book (or material) do you give her?

That's the one that teaches a high-variance, aggressive style with the purpose of reducing the edge of better players, right? That makes sense...

Three hours isn't enough because Mike sexton said it takes a lifetime to master poker.

What are your thoughts on his "Modern" book? Does it prepare you for the way tourney play is played today?

I think it is good beginner book and covers all the basics. Also, it sounds pretty up to date.
Of course, I am no expert because I just play 5-6 bigger tournaments a year( couple cashes)

To someone who is just starting out in MTT's would you recommend they read his original series or his "Modern" book?

There's some players that say stick with his original books for the basics and because they are still great foundational books even for today's play. Others have said the original series is way too outdated and to get his "Modern" tourney book. Just courious what you and other players think?

Applications of No-Limit Hold'em could be a good one.
