This may be a rare situation where a company's logo was created before its name.
As I understand it, Mason Malmuth wanted a visual on the cover of his self-published book Gambling Theory and Other Topics which conveyed a sense of what the book was about- a mathematical approach to gambling.
Mason liked the visual (seen below) and it became the logo and name of the newly created publishing company.
