A lot of the world gets our news media, it must be incredibly frustrating.

Sklansky linked to a guy who divided the world into "America" (really the 1% and MIC so far as I can tell) and "terrorism". Sklansky thinks this guy is super-smart.

And you think I'm the one who brought up national divisions.

I have and i don't see it. Out of all the posters in this thread, you are the only one who is espousing this view so the onus is on you.

Uhhh....the thread was created precisely because his politics sound so dumb. He is obv not dumb because he is a full professor at Yale.

Guys, guys, you don't have to buy into DS's "smartest person who_____" framing every single time. Like we get it, organizing by teh smarts is a massive part of his worldview, but it's also really stupid, and leads to all sorts of ridiculous tangents, like this one.

Know Nothing name was not about supporting ignorance or stupidity.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_Nothing#Name

The name Know Nothing originated in the semi-secret organization of the party. When a member was asked about its activities, he was supposed to reply, "I know nothing." Outsiders called them "Know Nothings", and the name stuck. In 1855, the Know Nothings first entered politics under the American Party label.[7][8]

I'm aware of the history involved.

What you may be unaware of: it wouldn't be possible for a grouping with a moniker like that to achieve any sort of success in most other places.

I hadn't discounted that as a possibility, but I didn't get that impression.

Btw I'm not really sure that being a professor Yale is a get-out-of-jail card for dumbness. Many professors seem to be borderline or actually undiagnosed autistic. I don't think it is fair to call such people smart without referencing this.

For the same reasons many NFL players have spatial awareness that is off-the-charts yet nothing beyond high school education. Are they geniuses? Perhaps, the point being that they aren't really "smarter" than the professors. Indeed their form of intelligence is arguably more lucrative and therefore more valuable than that of the professors.

In the 1800's if most other places includes the world that is a strong clam. But ok i guess. Ill have to try and look up some wacky secret societies and political party names you enlightened Europeans had though...

It isn't that easy to think of smart american politicians. Most of them would not get beyond junior ministerial level in most european parliaments: your electorate has a stupidity fetish going back to the days of the know-nothings. Oddly enough given I loathe almost everything about her Ann Coulter probably has one of the most impressive intellects on the right. Though I was very far from being a fan of his Obama had a sharp mind and was unusually gifted in terms of emotional intelligence.
I like how you think that European politicians are the high watermark for political performance. I mean what ****ing dreamworld do you live in where European parliaments are the pinnacle for excellence? Do you even pay attention to the **** going down in Europe?

I suppose if the right has BroadwaySushy, the left must have GBV.

To be fair, we did elect Trump.

Euro politicians are corrupt, greedy, selfish, venal and in the pay of corporations.

What they generally are not, is ****ing stupid. Or crazy (a lot of eccentrics but that's different). They have a sort of low cunning that would be impressive were it used for something productive.

American politicians with relatively few exceptions are ****ing stupid.
Trump is ****ing stupid. His voters are animalistic and sub-literate. George Bush was ****ing stupid. And crazy.

(I suspect what you actually meant was "DON'T YOU KNOW THE MUSLIMS ARE TAKING OVER!!!?" No, they are not.)
