ISIS fights the rebels in Syria as much as the Syrian government. Getting rid of them weakens the Syrian government in several ways.
Also he has a bunch of other problems what with the Russian economy being decimated right now.
Finally there is zero chance Putin will put troops on the ground there and that I'd the only thing left given Europe and America is hitting them hard with airstrikes.
