Re: Wisconsin Governor deploys "nuclear option" and takes on public unions.
Ethanol, "green" foods, alternative energy, and pharmaceuticals.
Doyle always did have a "For Sale" sign on his office door.
None of those really help your case, sorry.
Super Steel, Menards, Mercury Marine, US Bowling Congress, etc etc etc. These are all major WI businesses that Doyle told to piss off, directly or indirectly.
Re: Wisconsin Governor deploys "nuclear option" and takes on public unions.
So proof that he engaged in similar activity wrt praising companies growing jobs as Walker is not proof that he did the same thing Walker is doing now?
Inso0 gonna Inso0...
FWIW I'm looking for some articles or something that shows Walker called companies that held press conferences saying they were moving work elsewhere, same for Doyle.
ETA: Found information on the Menards move. It has the company president siding with Doyle on trying to help them out. Seems odd he would stand up for him if he thought Doyle was hurting him somehow.
Quote:
"Governor Doyle has worked very well with Menards and myself over the years, helping us grow in Wisconsin. All of us at Menards appreciate the substantial assistance we have received from the Department of Transportation and the Department of Commerce under his administration," Menard said.
"While we have had some issues with the Department of Natural Resources over many years, I remain hopeful that as we continue to grow in Wisconsin we will be able to use this site for expansion."
Since 1999, John Menard has contributed $20,000 to Doyle, including $5,000 in April. Campaign contribution records show no contributions to Green from John Menard.
lots of animosity there for sure
Mercury Marine:
Quote:
“When I learned, earlier this year, about the market challenges Mercury Marine is facing as a result of the global economic downturn, I immediately engaged in discussions with company and community stakeholders,” Doyle said.
Doyle said the state has offered “an aggressive package to help Mercury Marine maintain its market leadership and operate efficiently.”
However, to access these resources, Mercury Marine must keep these jobs in Wisconsin, Doyle said.
*6 Months Later*
Governor Jim Doyle today recognized Mercury Marine Inc., its workers and the community for coming together to remain in Fond du Lac and announced the state incentive package. The Governor made the announcement at a press conference held today at the company's headquarters in Fond du Lac.
I'm done looking up articles. It's clear you were making **** up again.
Re: Wisconsin Governor deploys "nuclear option" and takes on public unions.
They never applied for a DNR waiver. From my quick googling they had applied for 35 in the past and been granted 30 while withdrawing 5. Yea, the DNR was sure out to get Menards...
They also started looking at the Ohio and Iowa facilities at the same time they started discussing things with the WI DNR. It wasn't like they went to the DNR, got screwed and then went looking elsewhere. As much as you'd like to believe that it isn't reality.
^ That's what having the Scott Walkers of the world as your governor for 21 of the past 25 years gets you. It's pretty sad that instead of hoping my state gets better I just have to hope that other states start tunneling to the bottom more quickly than we do.

orly?

“We spent more than three years of frustration and over $1 million of
our money trying to build this project here in Eau Claire and never received
permission to do so,” Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott told the Leader-Telegram in Eau Claire. “We are obviously frustrated and disappointed.”
Re: Wisconsin Governor deploys "nuclear option" and takes on public unions.
Yes, really.
Quote:
Erin Celello, a DNR spokeswoman in Madison, said Menards never applied for a permit for the project in Eau Claire. Menards executives began talking with the agency in July 2004 about the project, she said. Such discussions are a normal part of the process, allowing both sides to identify potential problems early and find ways to deal with them.
The agency and Menards last communicated on the matter on May 18, 2005, the DNR said.
Re: Wisconsin Governor deploys "nuclear option" and takes on public unions.
Thanks, but I'll believe the business, and not the DNR hack trying to save face for a retarded decision.
Quote:
The company now says Eau Claire lost out on another 600 to 800 jobs that will
by divided among distribution centers under construction in Shelby, Iowa, and
Holiday City, Ohio.
“Because the (Eau Claire) warehouse project wasn’t approved, we spread
the jobs to other locations,” Abbott said.
Dan Baumann, water leader at the DNR’s west-central regional office in
Eau Claire, said the agency approves about 97 percent of applications for wetland
fills, although the process often includes some give and take.
“If a proposal meets (state) standards, we issue a permit,” Baumann
said. “If it doesn’t, we work with the applicant to try and find a
way to revise the project to meet their needs and meet the state standards.”
Menards officials argued that their proposal for building a 750,000-square-foot
seasonal storage warehouse would have helped the environment because they offered
to offset the loss of the “so-called wetland” by creating a much bigger
wetland.
“We felt that we could replace it with a very high-quality wetland in
the immediate vicinity for a win-win situation for wildlife, jobs and all concerned,”
Abbott said.
Re: Wisconsin Governor deploys "nuclear option" and takes on public unions.
Please point me to the DNR decision that says they couldn't build there. You know, like a declined permit or something like that.
btw, this is another one of those retarded tangents I was talking about above. The larger point about how you came in here saying Doyle never tried to get companies to stay is still wrong.
Re: Wisconsin Governor deploys "nuclear option" and takes on public unions.
I love the underlying thesis of Ins0's post that "job creators" are spoiled little princesses who need constant attention and like presents and ****. If only Doyle had sent more fruit baskets...
Honorable Mention to his amazing and apparently sincere belief that the previous governor actually disliked jobs!
This board doesn't have signatures but we need a mod to get one just for Ins0 at the bottom of every post:
***THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO TALK RADIO ALL DAY ACTUALLY BELIEVE***

They are. They have a limited commodity that everyone wants (jobs and tax revenue) and as such, you need to compete for their affection.
Some states are good at this. Some are not. Walker is trying to make Wisconsin one of those business-friendly states that we have historically shown ourselves not to be.

Fly brings up a good point, though. There is a price where it makes sense to woo them, and a price where it makes sense to let some other sucker break his back for them. Just like a spoiled princess. Sure, they may be hot, but there is a price where it makes sense just to find a girl who is much less maintenance.
Almost all of these "business-friendly" gimmicks aren't necessarily "business-friendly", but "connected-business-friendly" schemes.
There's a way to just level the playing field and make yourself more desirable for all businesses rather than playing favorites with those who can fill your pockets with cash.
