Everybody subsidizes other people for stuff they themselves don't do or use. If we're cutting out subsidies, these are way down the list we need to start with. I have the master list.

Re: USPS Workers Launch Hunger Strike

The post office should just steal more money from people's mail imo.

My mother worked for the post office for like twenty years. She said there is something called "undeliverable bulk" mail that if they can't resend it to the sender, or get it to the recipient, if they find that it contains money they take it all and put it into coffers or some sort of fund or some ****.

Now tell me this **** would happen with a private business and it WOULDN'T go out of business if people found out.

I think that USPS employees participate in the federal civil service plan, which is funded. It's the retiree health benefits (medical, dental, and drug coverage for retirees) that are commonly unfunded but that USPS is required to fund.

Re: USPS Workers Launch Hunger Strike

This report from the USPS website shows that they didn't even make their post-retirement health benefit funding contribution in fiscal 2011.

http://about.usps.com/who-we-are/fin...ans/fy2012.pdf

Assuming the report is accurate, they still lost $2.2 billion despite not making their mandatory benefits funding contribution. Their 2012 budget is to lose $3.0 billion before post-retirement health funding ($14.1 billion loss after making the funding). I think their problems are quite a bit deeper than the fact that they are required to fund post-retirement health benefits in advance.

Doesn't allow any competition? What about FedEx, UPS, and DHL?

They can't even deliver to unlocked mail boxes. Only the government and the owner of the box can open it. And they can't deliver letters.

Re: USPS Workers Launch Hunger Strike

lol letters.

Seriously though, I think I use UPS/FedEx like 10 times more frequently than USPS. There might not be a sadder sight than that boxy little truck slogging its way down a suburban street, some geriatricwithaheartofgold leaning out the window, dropping off bills that no one is ever going to open.

Re: USPS Workers Launch Hunger Strike

If they want to cut costs, go to Monday, Wednesday, Friday delivery. Half the days paying for walking the neighborhood and I doubt a single person would notice outside of people burning Netflix DVDs. Any letter so important that it NEEDS to get there on a Tuesday can pay the extra $4 for priority shipping or go with UPS/FedEx.

if you hate the post office so much don't rent a PO box from them lol. use your goddamn free market principles.

I've gotten envelopes from dhl and ups. they leave it in my door. and almost all other letters are sent over free email. TREMBLE UNDERNEATH THE MONOPOLISTIC THUMB OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT.
