Re: Is Uber Doomed?

Yeah, I'd like more details on the fingerprinting and how that works. What is delivering the data to uber if the app is deleted? My understanding of what Apple was irritated about was quite a bit different than what those tweets imply.

Re: Is Uber Doomed?

Apple should be explaining why this is even possible. Seems like a huge defect in iOS

Re: Is Uber Doomed?

For those who like old-fashioned reading, this is the article those screenshots are from.

My best guess of what's going on, from this snippet:

Quote:
Uber had been secretly identifying and tagging iPhones even after its app had been deleted and the devices erased — a fraud detection maneuver that violated Apple’s privacy guidelines.
I'm guessing that what Uber did was...
- leave some kind of unerasable cookie behind on a device that uniquely identifies that device to Uber, even if the app is uninstalled
- being that this is related to fraud detection, that's probably so that if a user uses a fake CC or does something shady to Uber, then Uber is still able to tell who that user is if they delete the app and reinstall it; I believe that how things are supposed to work is that if someone uninstalls and reinstalls your app, you can't tell if they're the same person or not until they give you some piece of identifying information (i.e. logging in to an account or whatever), but that possibly puts Uber in a situation where users engaging in fraud can burn them again

What the article doesn't necessarily say to me (from the early part, I haven't read most of it yet and I'm not sure if they go deeper into this specific issue) is that Uber was tracking users or getting data from/about them while the Uber app was not installed. That's not to say Uber was doing nothing wrong, clearly when their app is uninstalled they're not supposed to leave anything behind, and it does seem curious that iOS didn't ensure all app data is deleted upon uninstalling.

Re: Is Uber Doomed?

How are they actively tracking people though with the app uninstalled? Is Uber tapped into the cel networks?

Yeah, the "they're tracking you when the app is uninstalled" sounds bogus. If it's true, it's worse for apple than uber.

Right, the quote from the end of the article that was in one of suzzer's screenshots seems to support my theory above:

Quote:
To halt the activity, Uber engineers assigned a persistent identity to iPhones with a small piece of code, a practice called “fingerprinting.” Uber could then identify an iPhone and prevent itself from being fooled even after the device was erased of its contents.

There was one problem: Fingerprinting iPhones broke Apple’s rules. Mr. Cook believed that wiping an iPhone should ensure that no trace of the owner’s identity remained on the device.
The "tracking" seems like it only would have allowed Uber to identify if the app was re-installed on the same phone even after the phone was wiped.

Re: Is Uber Doomed?

Which is not "tracking" in the way implied by the article at all. Tech + journalism ftw.

The really sketchy part is where they loaded different code if the IP address originated in Cupertino. That HAS to piss Apple off.

Uber board member cracks joke about women at sexual harassment meeting

Quote:
Billionaire businessman David Bonderman, a member of Uber’s board, apologized Tuesday for making what he called an “inappropriate” comment about women at a company-wide meeting that was aimed at addressing the harassment of women and other unprofessional conduct within the company.

At the event, Bonderman made a joke about women, saying that adding female board members would make it "much more likely there'll be more talking," according to several people who heard the remarks.

The comment came as an interruption of fellow board member Arianna Huffington, who was explaining the benefits of having more female representation on Uber's board.
The comedy of errors continues.

100% true. Also in many cases companies appoint these old white guys to leverage the connections they have, or as a reward for those connections having been leveraged.

When I heard he made a sexist joke, I assumed it was related to sex. What he said was far worse though really. Implied that men are the ones that get things done on boards, and women just talk which is equated to fluff.

He couldn't have had worse timing making this "joke" at an Uber conference discussed sexism in the company.

Re: Is Uber Doomed?

I have heard about Lyft, but as far as I know they don't operate outside of the the US.

Uber is doing very well in London and rest of UK, as well as many other European cities and Asian ones too! I'm sure they're making lots of money from places like Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore.

I know a guy driving for Uber in London and last I heard he was making pretty decent money. Uber in London on a weekend evening is always at least x1.25 surge rate, when last trains are gone it will go up to x1.5 for a while. I've seen the surge rate go up to x1.7 - x2 on busy nights like Halloween and NYE.

That's actually one of the reasons I interpret it this way.

A long time ago I was at a meeting with two successful people discussing a business at a restuarant. One was a man in his 50's and one was a woman in her 30's and me. Some water spilled on the table and our waitress, she's like 25, the guy yells for her to come clean it up and then the following happens:

i don't know how gross this sounds over the internet but it was really weird: He's like watching her clean up the spill and while shes wiping it up and the part that spilled on the floor he's staring at her and he goes " I love to watch a woman work."

it was like so weird especially considering how normal this guy was most of the time.

I don't think he realized how out of place it was at all because he's used to doing business with guys. Never underestimate male stupidity.
