Because after the fact a court can determine that the perpetrator failed in his attempt to kill you, or that he stopped short of killing you. It is unreasonable to assume that a person being assaulted can just decide "I don't think he's really going to kill me with this gun, knife, beating etc... I'll just let him continue instead of defending myself".

Anyways you just have to think that person is about to assault you and fear you'll be injured and it justifies deadly force under the proposed law. Like I told wil or whoever it was the other day I don't really care to argue about this specific law anymore as the Iowa Senate won't pass it so it won't matter anyways. OK but as I see it you would still have to have a reasonable fear for your life or permanent injury given the new Iowa law you cited or the Fla law we are talking about ITT. And I think that is the part that you are missing. IE someone would have to be threatening you with a weapon or a group of thugs are trying to strong arm you at minimum. In all of these laws you have to prove that the treat was real.

I get what your saying, it is bad if you can just say "yah It was self defense" and the cops say "kewl have a nice day sir" but thats not what is happening in this case or others.

Are we talking about the same case here? The cops were pretty much defending him in the press and also subtly blaming the victim (I bet he'd of done something different that day!) so I'm at a loss to why you would think that.

Well I think it is a poor choice of words and not something I would put out in press statement like that but... Calling your girlfriend instead of the cops and thinking "ima put my hoodie on and duck between these houses" is a pretty terrible decision. If he thought the guy was stalking him the best thing to do would be stay out in the lighted street and call the cops. So yes I think that in hindsight he would have done something different.
