I think it was the last thread someone posted the story that OKCupid was highlighting the anti-gay CEO of the Mozilla Foundation (responsible for FireFox).

Long story short he just stepped down.

Standard GOP anti-intellecutalism and corporate cronyism. Comparative effectiveness research is being pushed now that drug and medical device companies are in an arms race to discover new and more expensive ways to treat the same conditions. The government is asking companies to demonstrate not just that these new technologies are effective against the disease in question, but also that they are dollar-for-dollar more effective the treatment of the disease compared to the current standard of care. Otherwise, Medicare will only reimburse treatment for the current standard of care. Academic researchers might also conduct such studies. The GOP doesn't want any part of this seeing the light of day.

Mississippi sex ed:
Quote:
Sanford Johnson, deputy outreach coordinator for Mississippi First, an education policy group, encountered these values while addressing the school board in Hollandale, a dusty, rural community with a dilapidated downtown of shuttered stores and peeling paint.

Johnson thought he had made a good case for contraception education when he shared disturbing statistics: The local birthrate was 73 out of 1,000 females between 15 and 19; the national rate is 29.4 per 1,000.

He encountered the usual gasps of shock when he revealed that the rate of chlamydia, at 1,346.8 per 100,000 people, was nearly double the rest of Mississippi, and approaching triple the U.S. rate.

But later Johnson got a call from someone who had attended the board meeting — telling him that people who have sex before marriage don't go to heaven. The board voted for abstinence-only.
At least in abstinence only sex ed they get to play with chocolate.

Quote:
The curricula adopted by the school district in Oxford called on students to unwrap a piece of chocolate, pass it around class and observe how dirty it became.
"They're using the Peppermint Pattie to show that a girl is no longer clean or valuable after she's had sex — that she's been used,"

So it is effectively the opposite of a cost control?

UPS fires 250 teamsters after they walk out for 90 minutes protesting the firing of a union activist over an hours dispute. Harsh and some of the workers seem surprised that this was the result. UPS says they were told they would be fired if the violated the contract. Thoughts Joe? Is the company action unexpected or did the union leadership not adequately explain the risk?

A guy that worked for me used to moonlight with UPS and my bosses boss is a former UPS bigwig.

Low level dude was always astonished at how cordial (and it's not like great) our relationship with management was in contrast to UPS.

Bigwig makes me understand his surprise. (he looooves his metrics)

Yeah, the whole thing is quite the farce. Give people a subsidy without saying where it'll come from, make sure we get our harrumphs in about abortion, TORT REFORM, ACROSS STATE LINES, CUT NON-DEFENSE DISCRETIONARY SPENDING (yeah, that's in there, too), pay doctors less but also pay them more, for the uninsurable we'll just create some "high-risk pools" with no regard for how much insuring a pool like that would cost, keep the faucet flowing to big pharma, and a few other odds and ends.

UPS does seem remarkably old school. Boeing has labor problems but I would have been quite surprised to read that of a mass firing of machinist. A protest that utilized work rules for a slowdown maybe but putting members in harms way seems unlikely. The union is too sharp.

It would likely violate a no strike clause which would determine the discipline available. It could also violate federal law. Really depends on the language of the contract. My prediction is they all go back to work after some sort of settlement reiterating they can't just walk off.

weekly lol unions

Quote:
The winter's brutal weather aggravated the labor rancor. Over the first week of 2014, Southwest canceled 40% of its flights at Midway and delayed another 40%, largely due to weather. The carrier said that ramp workers at Midway called in sick more than 450 times over that week, for about 22% of their scheduled shifts.

After Southwest began requiring ramp workers to provide doctor's notes, the union sued the carrier for breach of contract in U.S. district court in Dallas.

In court documents, Southwest alleged the sick calls were "widely perceived to be a coordinated job action to protest the slow progress" of contract negotiations.

The union said there was no work action, but rather a spike in illnesses fueled by mandatory overtime that exhausted workers.

Meanwhile, over at Weekly Standard, things have died down since last week's "blacks are stupid lazy violent criminals" outbreak. Happy to report all is back to normal:

Jesus ****ing christ this gets my lawnmower flying. You want to teach your kids creationism because you desperately want your state to be ******ed compared to everyone else, fine, whatever, but failing to educate people about their own bodies is actively doing harm to them. ****ing disgusting.
