Re: state marijuana ballot measures 2012

Just a Canadian perspective

However, the June 18-25 survey by Ipsos Reid found that Canadians are much more willing to entertain the idea.

It found that 66 per cent of people believe that “the possession of marijuana in small amounts” should be “decriminalized so that it no longer carries a penalty or fine.” Another 34 per cent opposed the idea.

Support for decriminalization is strongest in Atlantic Canada (72 per cent) followed by British Columbia, Saskatchewan/Manitoba and Ontario — in all three regions, support for decriminalization runs at 69 per cent.

Opposition to decriminalization is strongest in Alberta, where 42 per cent of people don’t like the idea.

Last I read though most Canadians support penalties for selling. Makes little sense to me as small amounts for possession usually come from larger amounts for sale or growing your own.

The federal ban could still be enforced even if a state legalizes mj for recreational purposes, right?

Re: state marijuana ballot measures 2012

Colorado Springs nearly has more medical marijuana dispensaries than churches. The community is ok with weed.

Quote:
By the numbers

Number of churches – 200 churches within Colorado Springs city limits, based on property tax exemption records and excluding related church property such as parking lots and schools.
Number of medical marijuana businesses – 235 licenses have been issued by the Colorado Springs city clerk for dispensaries, infused edible manufacturers and grow centers, for use at 176 unique locations.

They really need to change the way the laws are. Either allow states to offer it or tell the states no. One or the other because it is messed up when legally the state could say ok but the feds would say no.

I would prefer if it was up to the states to decide. But really I would want federal regulation for the drug to be legal. Mainly cause the cost in enforcing the law is greater than legalizing the drug.

Well imo, the way to federal legalization and regulation is through the states. The federal government isn't going to take the initiative. Clearly progress has been up to the states. I think the states are basically going to force the federal government into legalizing eventually, so if that's what your goal is, you should support legalization in your state.

I don't smoke it so I don't care in that regard. I care more because it affects a lot of people. I know several people that do smoke it. A few I really would have liked to have met prior to them smoking to determine if it was the drugs that made them stupid or they were just stupid to begin with. But it kind of is ridiculous that marijuana can have harsh penalties that can be worst than other crimes that are violent or sexual in nature.
