If it's really about the sharing economy (which I would call the "everyone is a capitalist" economy), I disagree that communism would be an appropriate moniker.

This was basically the same as old-school communism: lots of pseudoeconomic ramblings followed by a demand to nationalize the most dynamic parts of the economy to empower the state.

sort of reminds me of the lottery. All the people playing know they're not going to win, but the slim chance of winning keeps them coming back. Similarly, all the lonely men or guys who want to cheat know it's not a real woman they're talking to, but the slight chance that it is keeps their wallets propped open.
It was more just that a particular class of stupid people were attracted to the site. Not all hookup sites are like that. As I've argued in other threads, signing up to Ashley Madison was like heading out clubbing to pick up and going into the nightclub that had half naked women dancing in the windows because ZOMG BOOBZ. The fact that that nightclub turns out to be some sort of scam does not mean it's impossible to pick up in a club.

In a world of tinder and grinder (and to a lesser extent stuff like POF) why were people actually paying for AM accounts?

I think the appeal of AM was that it was theoretically for cheaters who could cheat with other cheaters or people who were ok just having sex with someone who is in another relationship. Presumably, this would make things less messy for someone who is just looking for something on the side and nothing more.

I really don't know exactly how tinder, grinder, or anything else works for that matter, but I'm not sure that they really catered to that specifically. So using those sites would be less efficient for this specific purpose.

Kentucky elects its statewide offices this November. In a big upset, the GOP primary was won by a crazy Tea Party perennial candidate, and the general election is really close. I'm pretty scared about the prospect of Governor Matt Bevin.

So starting Tuesday, I'll be volunteering full time for the Democratic nominee, Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway. I have zero experience in this kind of thing. We'll see how it goes.

If you're using tinder, all females could see you in the area (assuming male looking for female). Wife's friends see your tinder account, gg you + tinder linked to fb, so its pretty open. AM was anonymous until you decide to meet up or share info or whatever.

How else would the bots bilk you for months of subscription fees?

My plan is to start a "White People League"" on gofundme or something then spam the most racist comments sections on the internet.

Looks like Lawrence Lessig met his fundraising goal and is throwing his hat in the ring:
Quote:
Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig met his self-imposed goal of crowd-funding $1 million by Labor Day, and Sunday on ABC announced he's running for the Democratic nomination for President.

Lessig, an activist with a grassroots following among some progressives, says he's running on a singular platform — the Citizen Equality Act of 2017. It would expand voting access, ban gerrymandering and institute campaign finance reform.

"I think I'm running to get people to acknowledge the elephant in the room," Lessig said Sunday on ABC. "This stalemate, partisan platform of American politics in Washington right now doesn't work. And we have to find a way to elevate the debate to focus on the changes that would actually get us a government that could work again, that is not captured by the tiniest fraction of the one percent who fund campaigns."

Just here to say how happy I am with Mitt Romney. His campaign promise was sub 6% unemployment and that's been achieved! I can only imagine how much more achieved that goal would have been if he took a totally different approach.

Is there a syrian refugee crisis thread? I can't seem to find one. It's pretty big news where i live and is dominating the headlines in the EU.

As far as I know, there are just a handful of posts near the end of the ISIS thread.

Not really. The ISIS thread has some discussion but we could use a dedicated thread.
