Despite my gushing 11 years ago, I was never under the impression that McCain was a Snowe type moderate, so I guess we're gonna find out just how normalized Trump is within the GOPe.

Damn. I'll always remember him as the 2000's John McCain who would chill out with John Stewart on the Daily Show.

Yeah, I have a hard time getting worked up about that.

I do agree with Fly though. Not sure why some of you guys think the McCain we've seen since 2007 isn't the real McCain.

Bummer, but he lived a long life and mostly served his country with honor. Not gonna cry when he goes but it is a shame of all the old GOP Senators, cancer picked him. They got the wrong "Mc."

No. Just some random guy? OK. Elected representative, prospective President? No.

What's quite conflicting is that John McCain has always been a POS legislatively and policy wise imo, but he's one of the only recognizable Republicans with 'standing up to Trump' rhetoric.

Question: Can I wish it was Trump, Pence, and Ryan instead without getting baned?

If not, I wish it was these three other people that I cannot name.

his A-4E Skyhawk was shot down by a missile over Hanoi.[34][35] McCain fractured both arms and a leg ejecting from the aircraft,[36] and nearly drowned when he parachuted into Trúc Bạch Lake.[34] Some North Vietnamese pulled him ashore, then others crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt and bayoneted him.[34] McCain was then transported to Hanoi's main Hỏa Lò Prison, nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton".[35]

Although McCain was badly wounded, his captors refused to treat his injuries, beating and interrogating him to get information; he was given medical care only when the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was a high-ranking admiral.[37] His status as a prisoner of war (POW) made the front pages of major newspapers.[38][39]
McCain spent six weeks in the hospital while receiving marginal care.[34] By then having lost 50 pounds (23 kg), in a chest cast, and with his gray hair turned white as snow,[34] McCain was sent to a different camp on the outskirts of Hanoi[40] in December 1967, into a cell with two other Americans who did not expect him to live a week.[41] In March 1968, McCain was put into solitary confinement, where he would remain for two years.[42]

In August 1968, a program of severe torture began on McCain.[45] He was subjected to rope bindings and repeated beatings every two hours, at the same time as he was suffering from dysentery.[34][45] Further injuries led to the beginning of a suicide attempt, stopped by guards.[34] Eventually, McCain made an anti-American propaganda "confession".[34] He has always felt that his statement was dishonorable, but as he later wrote, "I had learned what we all learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine."[46][47] Many American POWs were tortured and maltreated in order to extract "confessions" and propaganda statements;[48] virtually all of them eventually yielded something to their captors.[49] McCain subsequently received two to three beatings weekly because of his continued refusal to sign additional statements

Yeah, I'm gonna say I can't blame him for using the "g" word, all things considered. I'd be a little bitter after all that....

It would be interesting seeing how far Trump is willing to go to blame McCain's opposition on a cancery brain. The more upset he gets, the more of his base & their families he will be alienating.

Has Trump tweeted any well wishes or anything yet? Given how much he tweets it’s pretty crazy if he hasn’t yet.

He did. Generic "thoughts and prayers." More than I expected. So Presidential *choke*.

Not allowed by AZ law.

Governor appoints replacement, who must be Republican. He/she stays in office until next general election.

Yes, I'm bracing for a hundred "I disagree with his politics but"s and "I hope this influences his vote on health care"s. There are already lots of these on other threads in the Huffington Post. Why can't people offer their condolences, thoughts and prayers without any strings attached?

There's a non-zero chance that his (or his replacement's) vote on health care could literally be the difference between life or death for thousands of Americans. It's not too hard to understand the reasoning behind comments/discussions like that.

His mom is still alive though.

I'll give McCain some credit for standing up for the right thing when it comes to US torture policies, but even that is only because he personally suffered torture. If his plane hadn't been shot down he would 100% be all for it.

Unless you're tortured by white people of course, because that's the only race there's no really nasty word for.
