I think it's less goofy for the networks now, because the people he's debating won't have the chore of defending the administration. So he won't really clash as much, and they can probably try to blend him in as "that old guy who knows a lot about economics but doesn't actually have a chance or anything" or something like that.

I think following the Constitution IS better policy. Though I agree that following the Constitution just for the sake of following the Constitution is rather silly.
