Not as fun when you're on the short end of the Battle Royal however.
Also another interesting phenomenon is all the libertarians on this forum, who used to be more or less open-borders, adopting the "close the welfare state first, then open the borders" oh-so-convenient stance that meshes with Paul's.
If there were some way to determine this I would bet everything I own that a smaller % of illegal immigrants are sucking up govt resources than just about any other sector of the poor and working poor populations.
It takes a lot of gumption to get here in the first place. Your typical person with a "welfare queen" mentality is not going to save up everything s/he owns to pay a coyote just to land in a strange country and somehow try to make their way.
Illegal immigrants are very likely the hardest working people in this country and that stance of "close the welfare state first" is just beyond ridiculous.
I'm not saying open the borders either for a lot of obvious reasons. But the people who do make it here are the backbone of a lot of local economies (including LA where I live), and in general I have nothing but admiration for them. They make me think of what it must have been like for my great-great grandparents around the turn of the century in NYC as fresh Scottish and Italian immigrants.
