Shotgun is great for home defense, it's pretty hard to miss someone at close range, and the shot is less likely to go through walls and hit neighbors/junior sleeping in the next room, than some handgun calibers (don't remember which are good and which are bad about penetrating walls). The story a few posts up about chambering a round in a Glock and frightening away a burglar, is probably 10x more effective with a pump action shotgun.

Not to mention the obvious 'send a message to daughter's bf' perk is way better with a pump action shotgun.

So a shotgun blast can penetrate skin but not drywall?

I like my Taurus a lot. Its really easy to conceal because of how small it is.

Yeah I love my AK. I bought it about 5 years ago because I had a feeling it wouldn't be long before they would be more expensive and harder to get, looks like I was right. Too bad I didn't buy more ammo for it when it was cheaper though.

I think Neblis intended to link to this, or something, either way, check out the experiments on this page dealing with over penetration with hand gun/rifle/shotgun.

Just to sum up the above link:

1) The buckshot made a 2.5 inch entry wound, so the guys who did that study felt saying "its hard to miss" is untrue.

2) Whereas the 9mm, .40, .45 caliber pistol rounds penetrated 12 layers of sheet rock, which is equivalent to 6 interior walls, the shotgun buckshot only went through 6 layers of sheet rock, or, 3 interior walls.

3) The shotgun slug went through all 12 layers.

2 tells us that just because you're using a shotgun doesn't mean your wife in the next room is safe.

I heard a guy on the Lew Rockwell show who seemed to think a shotgun beats a pistol for home defense. He mentioned Mossberg as a good-quality, relatively inexpensive shotgun for home defense. Anyone have any thoughts on this or on Mossberg shotguns in particular? I found a youtube link and the guy used the "tactical cruiser" as his home defense weapon of choice:

if you're working with a small budget take your pick between a mossberg 500 and remington 870...really can't go wrong with either of them

This isn't the issue at all. Anyone can have a restraining order put out against them -- guilt is not a factor. There have been cases of jealous/vindictive ex-gf's simply telling a judge they are "in fear" and want a restraining order against their ex-bf -- the ex-bf (who happens to be a gun enthusiast) then has his entire gun collection confiscated by the police and is prohibited from buying another.

It also doesn't take much imagination to see how this sort of law could easily be taken advantage of by stalkers who want to ensure their prey is disarmed.

A shotgun is great for home defense. I would not recommend the pistol grip version. Shotguns have a lot of recoil, imprecise sights, and are clumsy to reload. All of these negatives are amplified without a shoulder stock.

Birdshot is not a good choice for home defense; it does not have enough penetration to reliably stop threats. Penetration of walls is a secondary consideration. Also, you shouldn’t be shooting at walls with family behind them; you need a plan of how you gather your family / secure your home and where you can shoot.

Most of the time that guns provide effective defense they are not fired.

FWIW I have a CCW permit but I rarely carry anymore.

If assailants are wearing body armor and you got the 9 yer dead. If you have a .22 and clint eastwood like reflexes and a steady hand you might have a chance.

I'll stick with my boom stick tho

Why do you live with the .22 but die with the 9?

Head shot easier to make.

I was really just looking for an excuse to post my army of darkness refreence that failed because I forgot how cultured this forum is and they would never watch a movie of that caliber.

Even if it was 1%, though, I'd still think it was worth the purchase. I mean, what are we talking here, $500, $800? Not much money in the grand scheme, and it could save your life one day. Not to mention that even if its not used, the mere presence of a gun can diffuse a situation, or perhaps stop a government from going too far.

By the way, for .22 plinking, if you're into rifles at all check out the Ruger 10/22 which Wesker showed above. Supposed to a pretty awesome .22, and it's relatively cheap iirc.
You gonna use it when the govt comes to confiscate it?
