I actually find that a (well built) 1911 has less recoil than some .40's, and is equal to some 9mm's.

I've seen many people on the Interwebs say that .40 muzzle flip is worse than .45. I've only shot .45 and .40 once each, so I really can't say.

To me a 1911 feels as though it's pushing back into my hand, whereas my GLOCK feels like it's recoiling up.

It's a different feeling.

Re: *** Politics Gun Owners Thread***

Anyone here reload their own ammo? Seemed like almost everyone at the USPSA match I went to collected their brass to reload.

I found this site: http://www.survivalblog.com/2009/06/...ory_loads.html

that calculates the cost savings you get from reloading. The data is 3 years old, but apparently, you need to reload 5000 rounds of handgun ammo in order to make up for the cost of reloading equipment. Not to mention the 25 hours it takes to reload 5000 rounds (approximately 200 rounds per hour is what I saw on one forum). Plus, the site is from 2009 when, iirc, the US had an ammo shortage. The shortage is over, so I would assume that ammo is even cheaper now.

Rifles are, of course, another subject. Rifle ammo is more expensive and you get a bigger savings--it only takes 1000 rounds to make up the cost of the reloading equipment.

Okay I'm going to a gun range this weekend to look at a few of the ones you guys have suggested. (Aside: A couple of people have been shot at this range in recent years, hopefully I survive the trip.)

I like this company quite a lot. PSA often has awesome deals on ammo and they offer pretty high quality AR15's for the price. I plan on purchasing a midlength rifle kit when they get them back in stock.

I don't usually subscribe to mailing lists but I'm on PSA's mailing list for their sales announcements.

What kind of process is there when you buy a gun online from a site like that? Do they do the ATF or whoever background check and ****? Comply with state waiting periods and ****? I've only bought a shotgun at Academy before imo.

No, the process is that you need to contact the gun store you desire the gun to be sent to, tell them you're purchasing a gun online, they'll give you all the information you need to give to the website, then get your name and #.

You pay the website for the gun, they ship it off to the gun store. Store calls you when it arrives. You go down there, go through the same process you would if you were buying a gun from the stores inventory, usually they charge $25 for this service, and you get your gun.

Re: *** Politics Gun Owners Thread***

Yeah firearms have to be sent to a FFL holder. My employer has a FFL so I payed nothing for the transfer. One shop I checked charges $50(huge ripoff) for transfers and a local pawnshop charges $20.

What's kind of neat about AR15's is only the lower is considered a firearm because it is engraved with the serial number, so I had to have the stripped lower transferred to a FFL holder. But when I order the complete upper and lower build kit I can just have it shipped to my residence.

If you really want to be low key about it, you can probably buy a stripped lower from an individual at a gun show and skip the paperwork altogether. They'll likely charge more than the $80-$90 that PSA does though.
