Any recommendations? I'm thinking about this:

The M1A Socom 16

And also possibly an XCR, though they haven't come out with their .308 set up yet.
M1A's aren't cheap, but you can customize the hell out of em. Check out the M1A forum at AR15.com

FAL's are also available in .308.

What do you plan to do with it?

Planning on needing to penetrate lvl IV body armor?

Taso,

You should probably get something chambered in .375 H&H Mag. That ought to to the job for whatever craziness you have planned. Or get one of those 8 gauge shotguns that the dad from Family Ties used in Tremors.

I have yet to have a scenario in my life where I would feel the need for a gun. I've been in some bar type scraps, and been in some rough neighborhoods, but never felt the need for one. Also for the last 7 years I've lived in a very low crime area so my idea of self protection is locking the front door. Hell I've had my car unlocked on accident for numerous times (realized auto beeper lock thingy stopped working) and no incidents.

Many of my friends own for hunting, but I can't think of anything more boring than waking up really early to sit and hope animals come around for me to kill.

It's like that poker saying "hours of boredom then seconds of sheer terror (or exhilaration in the case of hunting)"

Taso, if you can't put that bullet between their eyes for the guaranteed kill shot, time for a hand grenade with a 3 second fuse. Body armour or not, that'll slow em down.

Better to have and not need than need and not have. And according to some studies, the number of defensive gun uses per year can be upwards of a million.

Hunting's not for everyone. More meat for the rest of us!

Meh, no need for a gun=no gun for me. I'm not going to go pick one up, take a bunch of classes (which I would do upon purchase required or not), etc when I live in such a low crime area.

Hey keep hunting. Pretty much all I eat is meat. My weekends are for watching football and drinking though, not sitting in a deer stand I have promised friends I will go one of these days so when I do I will give a trip (death?) report and let ya'll know how it goes.

fwiw, I got a gun for a number of reasons (one being the possibility of needing to take out moose wearing level IV body armor obv), but also, the idea of a home invasion, and watching my family get raped/killed, when all I had to do was spend $500 and get an AK (or $200 and get a cheap handgun), is pretty disgusting to me. Get the thing, put it somewhere safe and forget about it until you need it.

(in before dozens of gun people saying OMG YOU NEED TO PRACTICE SO YOU CAN GET UNDER 2 MOA OTHERWISE THE BAD GUYS WILL BEAT YOU)

You're in college, right? I hope you live in an apartment because bringing a gun into a dorm is an insta-expulsion.
09-20-2009 , 12:39 AM
like the threat of being expelled from school would stop me from not getting slaughtered like a kid at virginia tech.

...but yes, i'm in an apartment.

If home defense is your main reason, have you given any thought to shotguns?
09-20-2009 , 03:16 AM
lol fwiw, i was joking about muresan hating the weapon in COD being good enough to stop me from getting it.

but no, home defense isn't my main reason. the "level IV body armored moose" was a hint :P

This thread is about to to go epic or vanish.

You can't take your rifle to class, that is where it would happen. The only way to protect yourself in this situation I feel, is to keep a concealed weapon in your backpack and make sure no one else can see it.

In the situation that you would need it, I don't think you or anybody else would care that you have it, at that point.

You'd be surprised. In a Chicago suburb a year ago, there was a case where a man killed a burglar with a handgun. The shooting was ruled justifiable, but the man was fined for violating that suburb's handgun ban.

I guess the homeowner would take it, but the police won't necessarily discover your gun in these circumstances. For Taso, I think the majority of students would call the police if they saw a gun in your backpack and they didn't know you. I would make double sure that I knew how the concealed carry laws applied to colleges in your state and ask your campus security what their position on concealed carry is.

If you want a gun for when SHTF, get yourself an AK and a good bolt action and practice like hell with them. Theoretically, if you had to deal with body armor, shoot at the legs, imo. Still a semi-large target and you'll take him and the buddies who help him away out of the fight. YMMV.

Not for purchasing, but for a CC permit you have to take a safety course in Clark County, Nevada.
