Holy crap!! $600!?!

When I bought my Romanian SAR it was around 2002 or 2003. I payed about $200 for the gun and at the time, 30 round magazines were $10 or $20 each and easy to find.

I haven't priced them out since then, and I know prices have gone through the roof in that time, but $600 seems pretty steep for me.

And honestly the AK is not that great of a gun. Ergonomically it's crappy, the sights are hard to use and they're not very accurate. I'm thinking you could find something way better for just a little more money, if indeed $600 is the going price right now for an AK-style gun and a few mags.

I sold a Chinese AK for $650 a few months ago.

They got ridiculous there for a while, but I think they are starting to come down a little bit.

I bought my WASR around 2004 and paid $300 for it, best $300 I ever spent. Around the same time at www.cheaperthandirt.com you could buy 30 round mags for $5...

Very great gun imo. I have never had a problem with the sights. I am more comfortable with them than any other sights. I will admit it might just be because I have been shooting with similar sights (SKS) for like 16 years and I just naturally got good with them. Once you get used to them they are fine imo. You can always change them too...

The accuracy is fine imo for what they are intended for. I don't have any trouble hitting man sized targets at 300 yards, which is pretty much what they were built to do.

The 7.62x39mm is a great round too, a nice compromise between the .223 and the .308. Reliability of the AK is also hard to beat...

Oddly enough, I seem to shoot way better with my SKS than my SAR.

I don't mind shooting from iron sights at all, but with my SAR (AK-type), I just seem to have a harder time lining up the front and rear sights and getting a good sight picture of the target. Honestly, I think the rear sight notch should probably be larger and the front sight easier to see. The problems are especially pronounced in less than ideal lighting conditions.

Honestly, my absolute favorite sights are the "ghost ring" type that you see on AR-15s. Once you get used to those, they are the tits. Fast target acquisition, and accurate as well.

I'm not trying to get all "This gun is better than that one." I know a ton of excellent shooters who really love the AK platform. I personally am sort of "meh" about it, but I think everyone should have one because they (used to be) are cheap and for the historical significance. I also know I could probably upgrade my AK sights pretty easily. I guess I just don't care that much.

how would one go about upgrading the sights? I'm familiar with the AK sights and I don't like them, but admittedly I've never tried to get used to them.

If you do a couple google searches you can probably find a mail order shop that specializes in AKs. As I said, those guns have a ton of aficionados and therefore there's lots of aftermarket doo-dads out there.

Or talk to a local gun store and ask them if they can recommend you a good gunsmith that will set you up.

Someone here will know.

In most states you do not need a permit at all to buy a gun. Where it gets tricky is if you want a hand gun to carry concealed, then most states require you to have a permit to carry.

If you want to keep a handgun at home, though, then most states don't require a permit. You need to be 21+ years old to buy a hand gun.

As for rifles and shotguns, there are only a few places in the country that require a permit.

You will need an ID for them to verify the paperwork.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a gun (or any big-ticket item for that matter) at a pawn shop unless I was familiar with the merchandise. Most pawn shops will rip you off and you need to haggle the price with them which is tough to do if you don't know what you would pay elsewhere for the same item.

I have a Lee Enfield Mk. III out of historical interest, and a .357 Python 4" because it's the best looking handgun ever made.

I don't really have any guns I "use", but I enjoy the occasional range day with assorted weapons with old buddies who are still in the military, usually stock MP-5s and Glock17. I'll probably get to test the HK416 soon and I am looking forward to that.

The funny thing about the law is you have to be 21+ to buy a handgun, but only 18 to own one. (at least in MT)

So I have a professor that I'm very close with and he said he knows some people at some Connecticut school for grad work (I'll be done with my bachelors in about a year's time), and he'd write me a good recommendation etcetc.

I'm looking over connecticut's gun laws, jesus ****ing christ. Registration, permits, waiting periods. Vomit. Plus, I think the AK 47 is absolutely banned there unless you have a Certificate of Ownership issued by the State from pre 1994.

Why so cheap? Though I've been hearing whispers of price reductions in the gun market.

Sighted in the rifles yesterday in preparation for hunting season. 1 .30-30 and 2 .30-06's. All are dialed in nicely.

Looks like it could be a fun plinking gun.

Hope none of you are in California. You'll soon need to be thumb printed and have records kept for 5 years on ammo purchases:

Just bought a Remington 870. It's pretty much like the gun in the link below. I'm looking forward to shooting it.

Can't really go wrong with this classic, imo.

Great shotgun. First pump I learned to use, and I still prefer them. My uncle loaned it to me, but if I owned it I'd still be using it I'm sure.

I got one similar to this some years back, and love it too.
10-14-2009 , 09:58 AM
For pump shotguns you really can't beat the 870 (or the tons of ones modeled after it). The only other pump I would probably rather have is my short barrel Winchester '97 (because it has no trigger disconnect and can be slamfired).
