What, in your most specific terms, is the constitutional principle at stake here?

I don't know if Obamacare will be overturned or not, but I do know that if it is, a great many Americans are going to die as a result. I hope you at least consider that once in a while as you craft your arguments against saving them.
I'm very sorry about your friend. That having been said, it seems she would literally have to give up seeking treatment for your story to be true.

20-somethings can't conceive of that yet, so it doesn't enter their thought process. I remember in my 20s - I just figured life ended at 30 - so why the hell would I try to make that old ****'s life any easier with good decisions now?

Also Obamacare is more of a wealth transfer from the wealthy to the working poor and lower middle class than anything else. Oh the horror.

How do you figure the wealth goes from the top to the bottom here?

Or pay a small unenforceable fine. You are "forced" to buy Obamacare the same way I am "forced" to buy goods from out of state because there's no tax on that.

It is difficult and expensive to become a doctor in part because of mismanagement of government insurance for student loans and because existing regulations create high barriers to entry (~10 years of education or so).

Right now, the bankruptcy laws that allow for the dischargeability of medical expenses operate as a tax on the income of doctors, who pass all or a part of that tax along to their paying customers.
Which is why Europe delivers medical care for half what we pay per capita - low regulations. Oh wait...

Or forced to buy a home. Or have a child. Or buy an energy-efficient automobile (or a gas guzzler if a Bush is in the White House).

Read the details of the bill, there are increases in taxes on the wealthy to pay for the subsidies for the working poor. I think capital gains.

Quote:
Surtax on Investment Income ($123 billion/Jan. 2013): This increase involves the creation of a new, 3.8 percent surtax on investment income earned in households making at least $250,000 ($200,000 single). This would result in the following top tax rates on investment income

Capital Gains

Dividends

2013+ (current law)

Do not buy. It seems clear to me that the transfer of wealth is from the healthy to the unhealthy.

See above.

Also what about the current transfer of wealth to the people who get defacto free health insurance?

Re: Obamacare Goes to Court

Just thought I'd mention that I went ahead and read the transcript of the argument.

And in my opinion, many pundits are overreacting if they are saying that the mandate is doomed.

The truth is that both Kennedy and Roberts, while challenging the government's lawyer a bit more and acknowledging concern over limiting principles, asked questions of both sides. And both seem to recognize that there is something different about the insurance/health market.

I could easily see either one of them concluding that the mandate is constitutional.

Simply put, it's impossible to tell what they'll do based upon just that transcript.

Good points the income surtax sure is progressive.

She died in 2007. She sought treatment for over a year before finally giving up. If she were born in Canada or France or the UK or Germany, or even Cuba she's probably be alive today but, bad luck for her, she was American.

Re: Obamacare Goes to Court

a large part of me wants this to be overturned, but another large part of me thinks the status quo is just as bad if not worse so **** it...maybe it'll lead to something better.
