Wait wait, I can do this for our side.

Guns kill about 20-30 thousand a year including suicides and accidents. Taking into account the advancement of technology and medicine since the time the country was founded, we can safely say that guns REALLY kill 17 million people each year

So I assume (based on the over 800 page thread) the Kates and Mauser Harvard study has already been discussed ITT...

I drove my car today for about 15 minutes. The amount of times drivers acted stupid, or pedestrians were almost hit was amazing. I can't fathom humans handling guns when they can't walk across the street with their dog, looking both ways first. Every day I see these idiotic drivers, there's no way I believe Americans will handle their guns safely.

Ban guns, cars, and people!

Ive seen this floating around FB:

Quote:
The UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) stated our "intentional homicides" were at 14,748 in 2012. We are ranked 8th in the world in their statistics. If we did as the pic suggests, we would only drop 5 spots and be 13th highest in the world.

Homicide Numbers by City 2012

Detroit -- 411
Chicago -- 512
DC -- 92
New Orleans -- 193

Four City Total -- 1,208
Adjusted National Total -- 14,748 - 1,208 = 13,540

Adjusted Rank -- 13th

How many people are shot and injured every year?
This is a really great site: http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/united-states

This are based on figures from 2011

1) There were 32,163 gun related deaths that year.
2) You had a .01% chance of dying from a gun.
3) If you did die, you were probably the one who pulled the trigger. There were almost twice as many suicides (1.78x) by guns that year than homicides.
4) If you did kill someone who was not yourself, you have slightly worse chances to river your one out (~1.3%) than to justifiably fire (~1.9%).

Seriously? I've been really curious about this for a while. I understand the whole amendment thing and defending yourself and your families against criminals. It keeps crime down and yada yada. Whatever else is topic of the month.
But the rest of the world does just fine with a baseball bat and a phone. Hell here in England - shocker - it's extremely rare for there to be any sort of crime involving a gun. Seeing as they're illegal and all it's kinda hard for anyone but the most serious of dudes to get hold of them. If we really have to kill each other we make do with knives and such.
I'm far from a badass but I've certainly known some shady dudes growing up. Never, EVER have I even heard a gun being mentioned. It's completely unnecessary and never crosses anyone's minds.
I'm not bashing 'Murica, I'm specifically asking why is it purely the USA that needs these laws to protect themselves from "insert whatever here"? I don't understand the usual arguments when any sane person can look at the rest of the world and realise they're just not relevant?
Seems to me like political dick waggling and nothing else but maybe us Euros are missing something? If it's not just politics at this point I really don't get it....

It really depends on what state or city you are in. In most of the rural parts of the country people live hunting, grow up around guns, and are quite comfortable with them. In some places getting a handgun would be just as difficult as in england.

Our fearmongering news media also has some people i know convinced the are likely to be the victims of a savage home invasion by some murderous bath salt junkies

Maybe you are right... Perhaps we should examine other useless relics from a bygone era.

Examples you ask? Why sure...
Checks and balances
Freedom of religion
Freedom of the press
The right to due process
The right to free assembly
Separation of church and state

Which do you choose?

Our country was founded on the freedom to do as we pleased. Had we not had guns in the 18th century, we could still be under British rule. With the increasing lack of morals and decision making, I want to be able to protect my family 1st and foremost. It had been said that after Pearl Harbor, the only thing that kept Japan from invading US soil was that so many Americans are armed and ready to defend! Guns are nothing an average person should be afraid of. It was instilled in me from an early age to RESPECT firearms, but not to fear them. Like many things, the object is not the danger, the danger is in whomever is using the object.

Got any type of, you know, source on that Pearl Harbor speculation?

Also your post doesnt answer the question in the slightest. He wants to know why things are different here than in the UK. You mention an increasing lack of morals. Are morals only declining in the US? If yes, why? If no, then your point is entirely non-sensical in relation to the question you quotes

That really doesn't matter, what does matter is a guaranteed constitutional right. We are aware you don't like it or agree with it wookie, that is your right.

People spouting idiocy deserve to be mocked even if they happen to accidentally be in favor of a broad reading of a Constitutional amendment.

Wak can wake me up when he gives a **** about the 4th, 5th, or 14th amendments.

Nah, this is a lie. Only a good guy with a gun could have stopped this bad guy with a gun.
