March for Science. Who's going to their local march? March for Science. Who's going to their local march?

04-09-2017 , 10:45 AM
Why

Science, scientists, and evidence-based policymaking are under attack. Budget cuts, censorship of researchers, disappearing datasets, and threats to dismantle government agencies harm us all, putting our health, food, air, water, climate, and jobs at risk. It is time for people who support science to take a public stand and be counted.

What

The March for Science is the first step of a global movement to defend the vital role science plays in our health, safety, economies, and governments.

How

We are building a broad, nonpartisan, and diverse coalition of organizations and individuals who stand up for science. We are advocating for evidence-based policymaking, science education, research funding, and inclusive and accessible science. All with your support!*

Who

People who value science. Science advocates, science educators, scientists, and concerned citizens. More than 170 partner organizations and counting. And you!

Where

The National Mall in Washington, DC and 425+ satellite marches around the world. For DC, event details here, and info on buses here.

When

April 22nd, 2017. But that’s only the beginning

Looks like I have the luxury of choice between SF, San Jose, Pacifica, and Livermore. Seems almost like so many that they will all be small.

Wife and I are in for Columbia, SC.

Wife and I, along with her sister and some friends are going the one in Livermore. Its a walk around the high school a couple miles from the Livermore Lab. That location could easily bring in a fair amount of people for a smaller town.

Me, my wife, and two kids in Los Angeles.

This way is a better approach.

  • The media and opponents who dont value science cant write these protesters off as "Madonna and a bunch of Hollywood loons".
  • The marchers get tons of local media attention.
  • The locals can visually see the large % of their own neighbors that value science. So can their Congressman and Senators.
  • They cant all be Soros paid protestors. Bussed in from other places.
  • The marchers are reassured that they are not alone. There are many neighbors who believe as they do. It emboldens further action.
Now, if no one shows up..............the crowds are small everywhere...........the strategy backfires.

I'm probably going to go to the Columbus, OH march.

Any good ideas for posters?

I don't have any suggestions for signs, but you should hit up the streetfightradio live show on 4/20 if you're going to be in the area

Some good ones there - thanks. I like:
“The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.”

Trying to stay with the theme of actually advocating for science, rather than this just being a bunch of people/scientists railing generically against Trump.

Given trumps alleged proclivities and russias cyber influence there's got to be a good p-hacking joke out there somewhere.
04-12-2017 , 12:24 PM
Putin engaged in pee-hacking in order to show significance.

Not a great poster for marching, but I liked:

What do we want?
Evidence-based science
When do we want it?
After peer review

Yeah Science ain't witty or "cool" to some but thats the great thing about science, it doesn't care about opinions, just facts.

so you want to take the politics out of science by politicizing it with a march?

maybe you can get Madonna to show up and talk about she has dreams about burning down the NIH.

Advocating for science and facts is a biased political position now?

Of course it is. When one party is opposed to science, promoting science is opposing that party.
