Article was paywalled for me, but huh? That quote seems pretty wild.

What sort of betting odds would people give me on Elon Musk being an alien or a time traveller or something? I pay $1 up front, you pay $X when Musk is revealed to be a cyborg prosthesis of a superintelligent AI.

It isn't good because A4hh benefits from the blinds coming along. Obviously if villain was in the big blind and the flop goes bet call call then raising is great. Raising and keeping the blinds from putting money in isn't as good.

Him - "Wasn't that kind of a waste of time?"

Me - "Yes."

He can also find out if one of the blinds has a 3. If he can get one of the blinds to fold an 8 AND get me to fold AQ on the turn then that's just awesome. He could also take a free card depending on the turn.

People do this brake check crap all the time and it felt good to be able to just floor it.

fwiw I think he should absolutely raise the flop if he has a 3 but almost nobody does.
I mean if he can get the blind to fold an eight then sure it's terrific. But another point is that if you're going to bluff with a flush draw it's probably better to do so with jack or queen or king high rather than ace high. And you shouldn't be bluffing with all of your flush draws, it's better to raise some and not raise others. Otherwise you won't have a flush when you just call the flop

NC trans bill really underscores how impossible it is to be a democrat in government right now. Republicans pass a ridiculously discriminatory bill that costs the state literal billions, but they still get to extract concessions from dems on repeal bc most of that cost falls on democratic areas.

Study of law student resumes finds that lower-class signals on resumes decimate men's chances of getting interviews at elite firms

They followed up by asking individual attorneys to explain why they would or wouldn't give someone a callback:

Quote:
Attorneys viewed higher-class candidates of either gender as being better fits with the culture and clientele of large law firms; lower-class candidates were seen as misfits and rejected. In fact, some attorneys even steered the lower-class candidates to less prestigious and lucrative sectors of legal practice, such as government and nonprofit roles, positions that tend to be more socioeconomically diverse than jobs at top law firms.

But even though higher-class women were seen as just as good “fits” as higher-class men, attorneys declined to interview these women because they believed they were the least committed of any group (including lower-class women) to working a demanding job. Our survey participants, as well as an additional 20 attorneys we interviewed, described higher-class women as “flight risks,” who might desert the firm for less time-intensive areas of legal practice or might even leave paid employment entirely.

The entire coal industry employs fewer people than Arby’s

"Although 76,000 might seem like a large number, consider that similar numbers of people are employed by, say, the bowling (69,088) and skiing (75,036) industries. Other dwindling industries, such as travel agencies (99,888 people), employ considerably more. Used-car dealerships provide 138,000 jobs. Theme parks provide nearly 144,000. Carwash employment tops 150,000."

For the first time, SpaceX reused one of those rockets they've been landing back on Earth.

Many minds were blown on Thursday as the 10-story tall first stage launched for the second time, hefting a 4,300kg payload on its way to a geostationary orbit about 36,000km above the Earth, and then returning to the planet.
Quote:
Reflying the first stage alone saves about 70 percent of the cost of a rocket launch. And the company has plans to eventually recycle its payload fairing and second stages, as well.
Quote:
He [Elon Musk] believes the final version of the Falcon 9 optimized for reuse, set to fly late this year or early in 2018, will be capable of 10 flights "with no refurbishment," and 100 flights with "moderate refurbishment." 24-hour turnarounds should come by next year.

I find this breakdown to be highly deceiving. For a few reasons

1. It is from 2013. Asset prices like housing and stocks have gone up significantly since then, which boomers own a significant portion of these assets.

2. It doesn't include entitlements like state pensions where boomers just are feasting. Many of them paid into the system like 1/2 of what people are paying in these days to keep the programs going. Then social security income stream. That's basically a bond worth 5-600k for most people.

3. Most of those networth calculations don't include personal residence and many boomers have houses that have gone up 3-4fold over the last 30 years that are now debt free. I know there are 2 calculations, 1 not including personal residence equity but tons of people could and should downsize their homes but let's face it, they just don't want to.

Sure there are some poor olds, but that generation overall did really well, regardless of what you want to attribute it to.

I can't imagine when trucks can start driving themselves on simple point A to point B highway drives. This is like 4 million jobs.

https://techcrunch.com/2016/04/25/th...lions-of-jobs/

If we're keeping coal around for 100k jobs then I fear we will go full-Luddite and thus delay this innovation.

The startup guys I work with in Aussie (Brisbane I think) are hunkered down. One of them is kind of a doomsday pretty prepper and has backup power for a month or something. He's like - who's laughing now MFer! Maybe if things really hit the fan he'll get to use all those silver coins he's been buying.

Glaringly, the bottom label (Queensland, a mainland province) is actually pointing to the island of Tasmania. I don't know if the rest of the labels are correct or not.
