So just before the national census in Australia last year, this idiocy was circulated as a chain email:

Quote:
“Bear in mind that although many Australians have no religion these days, the Muslim population in Australia will all declare that they are Muslim and this fact will be counted to ascertain what type of country we are in regard to religion,” the email states.

“Even though you may now have no religion, please consider entering the religion you were christened or born into, when answering this question.

“Otherwise in time Australia will officially be declared to be a Muslim country – because the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census will reflect this.”
Well, the results are in:

Quote:
Those reporting no religion increased noticeably from 19 per cent in 2006 to 30 per cent in 2016. The largest change was between 2011 (22 per cent) and 2016, when an additional 2.2 million people reported having no religion.
LOL RELIGION. Still 51% Christian, though. Also, Islam comes in at a terrifying 2.6%.

Edit: If you take Catholicism and Protestantism (mostly meaning Anglican here) as separate, No Religion is winning. This is the first time since records began that Catholicism has not had a plurality.

Impressive hubris to release the results just at the beginning of cyclone season. Better get a raincoat imo.

ChrisV,

What's the point of wanting to pretend (in the author's eyes) that you're not a Muslim country? Doesn't want the US to travel ban or bomb you?

If we were a Muslim country booze would be illegal and the fabric of society here would collapse.

Darwin award for:

US woman shoots boyfriend in YouTube stunt

Quote:
A Minnesota woman has been charged over the fatal shooting of her boyfriend, in what authorities say was a social media stunt gone wrong.

Monalisa Perez, 19, was booked into county jail after shooting at Pedro Ruiz as he held a book to his chest, believing it would stop the bullet.

The couple's three-year-old child and nearly 30 onlookers watched as she fired the fatal bullet into his chest.

Ruiz's aunt said they did it to increase their social media following.

Claudia Ruiz told WDAY-TV that her nephew had told her he wanted to do the stunt "because we want more viewers, we want to get famous".

does it say why they thought it would stop the bullet? had they practiced on another book?
06-29-2017 , 01:54 AM
I don't know, she doesn't state that so you'd have to assume not. As it was a hardback encyclopedia I guess they just assumed it would stop the bullet.

Seems a little late for a Darwin award.

Books can stop bullets, but it depends on the book and the bullet. They checked it out on Mythbusters once. Two phone books will stop even a deer slug. These guys used a hardcover encyclopedia, so as long as they just used a 9mm, I don't see what the prob.... wait, what's that?

Quote:
County Attorney James Brue described the book as a hardcover encyclopaedia, and said the weapon used was a .50-calibre Desert Eagle handgun.
You done ****ed up.
06-29-2017 , 02:32 AM
Like seriously, as stupid as the stunt was, he would almost certainly be fine if they'd just used a 9mm. I dunno what possessed them to choose a high-powered magnum.
06-29-2017 , 04:12 AM
Like even a Brit who has never seen a handgun knows not to use a Desert Eagle .50 calibre.
06-29-2017 , 05:05 AM
I blame the gun for this.

I assume it looks a lot cooler than a 9mm.

Actually thanks to the atf kerfuffle 7.0 is better than its been possibly ever (which isnt saying much) pokerdox seems like a good (right leaning?) poster as well as original position and well named is a top 5 poster sitewide (non poker category) he does the thanksless (possibly pointless) task of politely engaging with the deplorables over tens of posts conclusively proving that 90+% of them dont give a damn about the "productive conversations" that are getting "shouted down" in this forum.

There would be a thick encyclopedia book between the barrel and his body, authorities say he told 19-year-old Monalisa Perez. The pages, he reasoned, would stop the bullet.

He even had evidence that it had worked once before — a different book with an entrance hole but no exit.

Inforwars is Goop, but for nutjob Conservatives

Quote:
We looked at the ingredients used in products sold on the Infowars store, and compared them to products on the wellness shops Moon Juice and Goop. All make similar claims about the health benefits of these ingredients, but what gets called “Super Male Vitality” by Infowars is branded as “Sex Dust” by Moon Juice.
Quote:
Bacopa

Also an Ayurvedic herb, said to reduce stress, improve memory, and treat epilepsy, among other purported benefits. Goop uses bacopa in a supplement pack called “Why am I so Effing Tired;” Infowars sticks it in its “Brain Force Plus.”
Quote:
Chaga mushroom

Most of these wellness sites provide a long list of potential benefits from ingredients like the chaga mushroom. One site promises that Inonotus obliquus offers immune system support, “soothing properties,” blood pressure normalization, “DNA damage protection,” and a few more unbelievable health benefits. Moon Juice calls the mushroom a “joy promoter.” Studies on animals have shown that chaga can “inhibit cancer progression” and “activate some types of immune cells,” but the consensus is that studies in humans are needed.

Moon Juice: Chaga

Our Chaga mushrooms contain bio-active beta glucans [these have been shown to live up to some of their promises] to support the body’s innate defense systems.

Infowars: Caveman True Paleo Formula

The Ultimate In True Paleo Nutrition with Bone Broth, Turmeric Root, Chaga Mushroom, Bee Pollen, and other Ancient Supernutrients [sic, entire sentence].
etc etc.

Not sure if this is accurate. Moderation team has basically stepped back and is explicitly allowing all but the most egregious personal attacks; threads are on average very derailed and off-topic.

The forum has always been better when well named goes on a posting binge, and will go back to being terrible (more terrible than usual, imo) once he gets bored and/or tired.
