The Peace Corps needs people with practical experience information communications technology in spartan environments, which is basically exactly what my job is in the Air Force entails. I'm really interested in volunteering for a stint when my enlistment ends in 2014.

Do any of y'all happen to know anything about the Peace Corps? I thought there might well be a real diversity of opinion in this forum.

Re: June life thread

I've known a couple PCVs (that's the jargon Peace Corps Volunteers use to describe themselves) stateside, and I've met a few out in the field. They tend to be pretty interesting people.

Most of them get thrown into 3rd world ****holes with dubious job descriptions and inadequate resources. Because of this, the ones that don't wash out in the first 6 months tend to have certain characteristics in common. First, they can put up with a lot of **** that would make most soft 1st worlders go crying to their mommy; and second, they are usually very cynical.

They usually start out as idealistic hippies bent on saving the world, but after a few months in the field where their assigned task is to plant trees in a village in Africa where trees are somewhere near the bottom of the list of what locals actually need, they lose that idealism pretty quick. Despite this, they often maintain a firm belief that the pathetic little good they are actually accomplishing is, nevertheless, still worth doing. They are also very aware of the fact that they are a part of the State Department, and essentially front-line propaganda troops for USA#1.

Most of the ones I've met quickly earned my respect. They do difficult **** in difficult environments, and have no grandiose delusions about what they are doing or how much good it will do.

One of my exgf's college roommates was a PCV. She got sent to the Dominican Republic. Friends went to visit her thinking they'd be hanging out in a cool tropical place, maybe with a beach, but found out she lived in a 1-room ****hole invested with tropical bugs and rodents. And there was a community shower you had to draw your own water for. So it wasn't a vacation spot.

She ended up marrying a local guy and bringing him home. He speaks no English and had never seen an oven before when he got here, so there was a bit of a learning curve. Another friend went to Honduras and married a local guy. So it appears to be an excellent way to bang and marry locals while working off some first world guilt.

I drove up here yesterday and I'll be here for a week, but my wife literally has an itinerary for every moment we are here. You going to Circ de Soleil next week? Or my cousin's wedding?
