Re: Julying? Julying to me mang? July Life Thread
Is there a replacement for bread and pasta, even something that isnt quite like either (such as a cracker or potato based flatbread as substitute off the top of my head)?
I would give the diet a go and while I would struggle without pasta (though can get by on potato which I assume is fine) not being able to have a sandwich is a roadblock I would need to find a way around.
Something like Lefse as a substitute perhaps (doing a quick google)?

Edit, looking it up Potatoes are really high in carbs which misses the point, lol.

There's pasta made of quinoa instead of wheat. Tastes very similar to normal wheat pasta with more protein and less carbs. Spaghetti squash isn't terrible also imo.

I've read that you can slice squash really thin and use it as a pasta substitute. Haven't tried it personally. I did try to substitute mashed turnips for mashed potatoes, and I'd give that a 4/10.
There are flours you can use with low carbs, like almond flour (I think). You can also make some pretty decent pancake-like things out of cream cheese and eggs.
Lots of this stuff doesn't sound very appealing at first, but anything moderately bread or pasta-like after 3 or 4 weeks on a low carb diet is a treat.

Re: Julying? Julying to me mang? July Life Thread
More on the above, and why I'm giving this primal thing a go.
Elliot and I are forum's resident marathon runners (horray once again for running NYC this fall). I'm certainly no slouch at it, running a sub 3:08 in April (that averages 7:10/mile over 26.2). This is somewhat remarkable given that I'm also a bigger dude (6'1" 208 lbs). This bigness aspect got me turned onto primal. I'm about one year back into serious running (I was pushing 220 before this). I managed to get down to around 203-204 when hitting peak mileage of 50-60 per week. But now, the second my mileage goes down, weight immediately comes back on. This happened in Nov when I got a stress fracture that had to heal (immediate 10 lb gain), and began to happen in late May after my last race (only running 1-2 times per week since then). So I'm in the unfortunate position of looking at returning to a portly 220 or more if I'm unable to put the miles in.
I'm about 10-11 days into primal and my weight gain has stopped. This is of course unprecedented for me during times of low mileage. I have a reasonable expectation that the pounds will melt off as I begin building base miles this month. The other big win thus far is that I'm not hungry all the time like before. At 7AM I'll have bacon and eggs for breakfast with a cup of coffee (maybe some fresh rasberries on the side) and the thought of eating doesn't occur to me until early afternoon. Lunch I will typically do some assorted lunch meats (turkey/pastrami/ham) with cheese, and a salad or sliced vegetables. Dinner will be a big hunk of meat somehow--a favorite is a ribeye steak fried in butter, then frying up some yellow squash in the butter/meat juices. No calorie counting whatsoever, just a simple "eat from this list, don't eat from that list."

I need to get into the quinoa business, it seems to only be 10 times the price of normal pasta

Best of luck, Bigdaddydvo. I'm at 23, one year removed from high school and college track/xc, but looking to run a marathon at some point. A couple of mishandled injuries left me with arthritis that will most likely keep my milage painfully low, but **** it. Any marathons coming up on your calendar?

Yeah, great stuff - we have it for dinner at least once a week. Perks of being too poor to afford my own place and having a mom that's a frothy-mouthed health teacher.

Phill, you can make a bun out of bacon.
I'll take a pic the next time I do it.

NYC this fall, and my 3:07 qualifies me for Boston in the spring (which I'll also be running)

The wife made zucchini spaghetti with meat sauce for dinner tonight. Huge win.

Flying out to Estes Park, CO tomorrow to hang out with a friend. I've heard it's one of the most beautiful places in the country this time of year; I hope the smoke/fires haven't ruined too much.
