If you are going to Baldi Hot Springs, that's fun, but watch out for the waterslides, I'm not sure they safety is up to American standards.

All roads in CR are bumpy.

I disagree about Arenal, but we had perfect weather the time we went to see it, so we had some great views of the volcano. Tabacon hot springs was enjoyable as was the ziplining, but I don't remember which one I did.
I've only driven through Samara once, so I don't know a lot about it other than it's beautiful, like most of the CR Pacific coast.

I'm not sure what route you plan on taking to get there, but, if you're somewhat adventuresome, the road that takes you along the coast, 150 I think, is pretty fun because it takes you through all sorts of cool small coastal towns. However, you want to make sure you get a rental car that has 4 wheel drive and decent clearance because the roads can get washed out at times, and sometimes you may need to drive through a stream or two. Actually, you probably want a 4x4 vehicle wherever you plan on driving.
It probably goes without saying, but just in case don't leave any valuables unguarded. It's a pretty safe in CR overall, but petty theft is rampant. If you're driving through a bigger city, like San Jose, make sure your doors are locked. I was once driving through the city on my way back to the airport with some friends and got stuck in a traffic jam when I decided to take them on a detour through the city. All of a sudden a guy cut across the street, ran up behind our car and tried to open the trunk! This was in broad daylight, and there were 5 of us in the SUV. Luckily I remembered to lock the doors not 5 minutes before that, so we were spared the inconvenience/embarrassment.
On the off chance that you were thinking about going through a place called Jaco, don't. It really really sucks. Dirty, dangerous, too commercialized.
I'm super jealous, I absolutely love it down there. The Nicoya Peninsula is my favorite part of the country, too, aside from maybe Pavones all the way down by Panama. Have fun, I hope you guys enjoy your trip.
