Well it could be that France's version of secularism, laïcité, is much more stridently anti-religious as it's set against the backdrop of the French Revolution against Catholicism and the European Union has more French secularists than Anglophile secularists.

Are we talking about the same thing? The people that come to your office and explain the different insurance packages? I only went through it once but I don't see how/why they could get commission. Everybody just signs up thorough the website and most people don't show up to the seminar. I can see the people who convince upper management to go with aetna etc getting comission, but that seems totally different from explaining the 3 options to joe blow employee that he must take or turn down compensation.

heh, walked past a woman in Harlem today (in 90 degree heat and ridiculous humidity, no less) wearing the full niqab including covering her hands with gloves and thought about that French law and how absurd it was

This is basically how my french teachers talked about the topic. It wasn't some part of a larger "we hate muslims" undercurrent. It was an "all people are equal and treating women differently is wrong" type of thing. They are, as you might guess, extremely pro-equality, some might say to the point of hilarity or extremism.

Another way of looking at it is that they are not so tolerant that they tolerate intolerance.
